Bermudian freshman earns third place

Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus had an incredible debut at the state tournament.

It just had an anticlimactic finish.

The Bermudian Springs freshman took third place at 127 pounds in Class 2A when his opponent, Coen Bainey, injured his knee in the second period of their bout and had to forfeit. Bainey had just taken a 3-0 lead when he sustained the injury.

Yacoviello-Andrus finishes his freshman season with a 45-6 record. He won six straight matches at states after losing his first-round match.

Macon Myers is climbing the podium.

The Central York senior will wrestle for third place at 172 pounds after an 8-3 win over Pennridge’s Talan Hogan in the consolations Saturday morning. Hogan reached the semifinals before losing earlier Saturday.

He'll face Nazareth's Dominic Wheatley in the third-place match Saturday night.

A Bloomsburg commit, Myers had never won a state medal before this season.

Shippensburg's Frontino bounces back

Dominic Frontino didn't let a disappointing loss in the 160-pound semifinals derail him Saturday.

He beat Franklin Regional’s Gavyn Beck, 10-1, to reach the Class 3A third-place match Saturday evening.

He'll face Bethlehem Catholic's Andrew Harmon in the third-place match tonight.

Shippensburg's Frontino falls in semifinals

Dominic Frontino didn't give up any takedowns Saturday morning.

He just didn't score any, either.

The Shippensburg senior lost to Chartiers Valley's Dylan Evans, 2-1, in the Class 3A semifinals at 160 pounds. Frontino also lost to Evans in the state quarterfinals at 152 pounds last season.

The match was tied 1-1 midway through the third period with each wrestler earning a takedown each. But Frontino was called for a stall while trying to avoid giving up a takedown by the edge of the mat. He then appeared to injury his knee with 25 seconds left in the mat.

Frontino wrestled aggressively the last 25 seconds but Evans avoided giving up his legs.

Frontino can still earn third place and will wrestle Franklin Regional's Gavyn Beck later Saturday morning to reach the third-place match.

Central York's Macon Myers still alive for third

One York County wrestle won his match Saturday morning

Central York's Macon Myers beat Kiski Area's Mark Gray, 4-1, in the Class 3A 172-pound consolations. Myers took the lead with a second-period reversal and added a takedown in the third.

Myers will wrestle Pennridge's Talan Hogan in the consolations later Saturday morning. A win will send him to the third-place match Saturday night. A loss will send him to the fifth-place match.

Two other York County wrestlers fall to seventh-place match

Central York's Eli Long and Spring Grove's Michael Hershey will still earn state medals. They just won't be as high on the podium as they'd like.

Long lost 3-2, to Hempfield Area’s Eli Carr at 139 pounds. Hershey was pinned by Pine-Richland’s Joey Schneck at heavyweight.

Two two will wrestle for seventh place Saturday night.

Lebanon senior will wrestle for second state medal

For the second straight season, Lebanon's Griffin Gonzalez will wrestle for seventh place.

The Lebanon senior lost to Bethlehem Catholic’s Jake Dailey, 7-2, at 152 pounds in the 3A consolations. He'll face Altoon's Luke Sipes for seventh tonight. Gonzalez beat Sipes, 3-1, in the first round Thursday.
