Ketanji Brown Jackson's Supreme Court confirmation hearings: A recap of day 1
The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson concluded Monday on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., with Jackson delivering an opening statement to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who will be questioning her this week.
If confirmed, Jackson would be the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court. The 51-year-old judge was confirmed to her current post on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit by the Senate in a bipartisan vote last summer. But some Republicans, perhaps those with eyes on the White House, have sharpened their attacks in recent days.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the Senate Judiciary chairman, began Monday's hearing by brushing away attacks from Republicans that she had been too lenient “child porn offenders.”
