Kristen’s Classroom: Understanding drought

KXAN (AUSTIN) — Recent rainfall led to improvements in the severe drought most of Central Texas started the year experiencing. However, even half a foot of rain in the Austin-metro won’t completely extinguish the drought.

Meteorologist Kristen Currie spoke with KXAN Live anchor Will DuPree about the basics of drought and what goes into the updates shown in newscasts every week.

It’s important to remember that drought updates encompass more than just precipitation. It also includes other physical indicators, like reservoir levels, stream flows, vegetation health and other factors.

Drought conditions are tightly intertwined with our water cycle.
