Live music, ceremonies: Memorial Day events near Anderson, also free boat inspections

Memorial Day, a holiday honoring American soldiers who died in service of their country, is around the corner, bringing sunshine after a week of rain.

A somber day of remembrance, it offers opportunity to reflect and spend time with family.

Here are local events around Anderson County:

Clemson University hosting Memorial Day Service, Sunday

Three stones bearing the names of Clemson alumni who died while on military duty will be added to the University’s Scroll of Honor Memorial during a ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 29, a statement from the university said.

The service, which will feature a twenty-one-gun salute at the Scroll of Honor Memorial across Williamson Road from Memorial Stadium.

The Scroll of Honor Memorial is a raised barrow, or burial mound, ringed by stones that are engraved with the name and class year of each fallen alumnus.

The three alumni being honored Sunday were discovered through research and their addition will bring the total number of engraved stones to 497, the statement said.

The three men being honored with stones are:

  • Capt. Lewis Anderson Page Jr., who attended Clemson in 1941-1942, served as a B-17 Flying Fortress navigator during World War II and as a pilot with the 18th Fighter Bomber Group in the Korean War. He died on June 20, 1953, when the Air Force T-33 jet he was piloting crashed at the airport in Pittsburgh.

  • Lt. Wilfert O’Dell Davis Jr., who also attended Clemson in 1941-1942, served in the Army Air Corps as a P-51 Mustang instructor. Davis was en route to the Overseas Replacement Depot in Kearns, Utah, when the Army C-47 transport plane he was on crashed near Goodland, Kansas, killing him and 13 other servicemen on July 18, 1946.

  • Lt. Howard Dixon Ulmer Jr., who attended Clemson from 1961-1962, served in Vietnam as a Rotary Wing Aviation Commander with the 1st Aviation Brigade. On October 3, 1966, the UH-1D helicopter he was commanding encountered severe weather and crashed while en route to a base camp, killing Ulmer and the other occupant.

The ceremony is being hosted by The Clemson Corps; seating is limited and visitors can bring their own chairs.

Ceremony at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson

At 10 a.m. Monday, veterans will be recognized at the M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson (140 Inway Drive).

Dan Cooper, the son of Dolly Cooper, will be among the speakers recognizing veterans.

Memorial Day Ceremony in Honea Path, Monday

Honea Path will be hosting its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the Memorial Monument, on May 30 at 10 a.m.

The war memorial at the intersection of Main and Greer streets lists the names of Honea Path residents who died in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Big Water Marina expecting crowds all weekend

As locals and visitors spend time with others on the lake this weekend, Big Water Marina will be having a variety of events.

J.R. Cash's Grill and Bar at Big Water Marina will have bands from Friday to Monday along with food trucks Saturday and Sunday.

Paddleboard yoga will also be available to purchase tickets at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

SCDNR will inspect boats for free during Memorial Day weekend

The SC Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Law Enforcement Division will be holding courtesy boat inspections at public boat landings across the state, the agency said in a press release.

SCDNR officers will inspect boats to ensure safety equipment and registration is all up to par. These inspections are voluntary and not required, the release said.

If a regulation needs to be adjusted, boaters won't be given a ticket but the opportunity to correct the problem.

The inspections will occur all over the state but here are two Upstate locations:

Pickens

  • Twelve Mile Landing - Lake Hartwell, 10 a.m.-Noon
