Live at The Pillars: Mansion for sale in Lowndesboro

Live in Southern charm inside a historic and updated mansion for sale along with 5.5 acres in peaceful Lowndesboro.

Lowndesboro is a rural community located 15 minutes west of the Montgomery Regional Airport, secluded but not isolated, Realtor Dean Ahrendt said. The two-story Greek Revival home, called The Pillars, is just 25 minutes from the Capital City, he added.

“Built circa 1856, this historically significant home exemplifies Greek Revival architecture from the period. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Historic Register, it was also included in the 1934 Historic American Building Survey, HABS, catalogued at the U.S. Library of Congress,” Ahrendt said. “The Pillars is a 2-story heart pine wood frame home with two porticos. The west portico is supported by six fluted Doric columns while the south portico has four identical Doric columns. Both porticos have original balustraded balconies. On the exterior, one sees original wood shutters, original 6-over-6 windows, recently reglazed, four sets of original double French doors and original dentil molding.”

The elegant home and 5.5 acres at 500 S. Broad St. are for sale for $829,000. The home includes four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms within 4,775 square feet of living space.

Ahrendt said while the home has been updated, the work was done while maintaining the historic character of The Pillars.

“The Pillars has been thoughtfully updated for comfortable living. A major renovation of all bathrooms and the kitchen was completed in 2010, along with new HVAC units and attic insulation,” he said. “Additional restoration and renovation have been completed within the past year, including, but not limited to, foundational supports, full interior and exterior painting, a new septic system, spray foam insulation in the crawl space and removal/repair of an incongruous addition.”

The kitchen boasts high-end Thermador appliances including a six-burner commercial range and hood vent, refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher. There is an adjoining breakfast room. A large kitchen pantry houses an additional freezer and ample shelving.

The Pillars is one of several historic homes and churches that grace the quiet community of Lowndesboro. In recent years the Lowndesboro area received a grant to install fiber internet service, so the home has the fastest internet around, Ahrendt said.

The lush grounds of The Pillars are beautiful. A historic cemetery, listed on the Alabama Historic Registry, adjoins the property. A new fence along the front road has a solar-powered electronic entry gate allowing limited access to the property.

Mature trees and greenspace set the stage for enjoying spring and fall evenings outside relaxing on the patio.

“There are huge magnolias, a variety of mature oaks and pines, gingko, Osage orange, Carolina cherry laurels, ancient pecans, cedars, crepe myrtles, and even a large palm,” Ahrendt said. “Azaleas, daffodils, and camellias splash their colors. Mature boxwoods line the rear drive and grace much of the front of the home. A restored parterre garden adorns the south lawn.”
