LIVE: No. 1 Purdue basketball makes unwanted NCAA tournament history
Purdue basketball is the No. 1 seed in the East Region 2023 NCAA Tournament, and it meets No. 16 Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round.
The Boilermakers (29-5) swept the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships behind Player of the Year Zach Edey, their 7-4 junior. Purdue nearly relinquished all of a 17-point lead in the closing minutes against Penn State in the tournament title game, largely because of ongoing issues attacking full-court presses.
That's where Fairleigh Dickinson (20-15) comes in. The Northeast Conference representative β which made it despite not winning its conference tournament β is the shortest team in March Madness, so the Knights are intent on creating mayhem for opponents.
Fairleigh Dickinson coach Tobin Anderson has a lot of confidence in his team, and Purdue's David Jenkins Jr. heard about it.
Sam King, Akeem Glaspie and Gregg Doyel will have updates throughout, and we will have highlights, so please remember to refresh.
Final: Fairleigh Dickinson 63, Purdue 58
Purdue has lost to double-digit seeds the past three tournaments -- North Texas, St. Peters and FDU. The Knights become the second No. 16 seed in tournament history to win. Maryland-Baltimore County beat Virginia in 2018.
Zach Edey has 21 points and 15 rebounds but gets little help. Fletcher Loyer has 13 points and Mason Gillis has 10 points and 7 rebounds, but is 1-of-7 on 3s. Braden Smith has 7 points, including 1-of-6 on 3s, and 7 turnovers.
Purdue makes 5-of-26 3-pointers and has 15 turnovers. Besides Edey, the Boilers make 12-of-42 from the field.
Sean Moore has 19 points, and Demetre Roberts has 12 for FDU.

Fletcher Loyer hits a 3 with 1:22 to go. FDU leads 58-56.
Out of a timeout, Zach Edey can't handle in-bounds pass and FDU gets a fast-break layup.

Purdue hasn't scored since Loyer's 3. FDU has just 2 Sean Moore free throws.
3:07 left 2H: FDU 54, Purdue 53
Fletcher Loyer hits a 3 with 7:08 to go, bringing Purdue within 1.
This game is every bit as ugly as FDU needed it to be. FDU 54, Purdue 53, 3:07 to go. Purdue 4 turnovers in last 5:25 and hasn't scored in 4+ minutes. FDU is 1 of last 8 and 0-6 and hasn't scored in 4:23.

Zach Edey has 21 points and 12 rebounds. The rest of Purdue is 10-of 33 and has 14 turnovers.

Zach Edey with a double-double?! You don't say. He leads the nation with 27.
Purdue has its largest lead of 6 points before Demetre Roberts gets an And-1 for FDU.

FDU extends its lead to 5 points before Purdue breaks a press and Zach Edey gets the And-1.
15:01 left 2H: FDU 39, Purdue 36
Purdue has missed 7 straight shots and has 10 turnovers.
FDU 39, Purdue 36. 15:01. Starting to feel like a real possibility. You think if Purdue was going to wake up, it would've done it by now. Other than a mini 7-0 run in the first half to take a 20-19 lead, the Boilermakers just aren't there.

Nationwide Arena is 1/3 Purdue fans. The other 2/3 - fans of FDU, Memphis and FAU - are cheering for the 16-v-1 upset.

Sean Moore, who averages 6.7 points per game, has 10.
Ansley Almonor, FDU's biggest player, picks up his 3rd foul and exits.
Mason Gillis hits a 3 with 19:30 to go, giving Purdue the lead. Sean Moore answers with an FDU 3.
Halftime: FDU 32, Purdue 31
Zach Edey has 12 points and 6 rebounds, Braden Smith has 7 points and 5 turnovers, and Fletcher Loyer has 5 points. Purdue is +4 in rebounds against the tournament's shortest team and is hitting less than 20% of its 3-pointers.
FDU has a late 10-5 run, the Knights are 4-of-11 on 3-pointers and Purdue has 8 turnovers. Reserves Heru Bligen and Cameron Tweedy have 6 points each.
FDU 32, Purdue 31. Half. Boilermaker fans everywhere, "Here we go again."

Zach Edey has 10 points but the Boilers are just 20% on 3s. Fletcher Loyer is 1-of-4.
Joe Munden Jr. hits a 3 to stop Purdue's 11-point run. Then Purdue has trouble with the full-court press and commits its 7th turnover.
Purdue 26, FDU 22, 3:28. Knights are just 1 of last 7 and turned the ball over four times in the last 6:45. Boilermakers need to cash in and put this team away early. Longer FDU hangs around, the longer the worry it'll shoot Purdue back to West Lafayette at some point.

Purdue scores 7 straight to take the lead.

Best player on the floor, so far, has been Braden Smith. Breaking press by himself, scoring, collapsing defense with drives and finding teammates. He has 5 points, 3 assists and pesty 94-foot defense.

Zach Edey's dunk makes him 1-of-4 from the field and breaks FDU's 7-0 run.
Purdue has 4 turnovers already, and Zach Edey picks up his 1st foul.
FDU shows a full-court press, but Purdue breaks it. However, a bad pass in the front court results in a turnover.
Purdue gets a putback basket, and so does FDU.

Braden Smith hits a jumper with 18:17 to go, making it 2-2.
Sean Moore goes at Zach Edey from the outside and creates enough room to hit an 8-footer for the game's first points.

Purdue guard Braden Smith might be nicked up
IndyStar's Gregg Doyel watches the freshman guard keep the middle finger on his right hand loose. He remains in the familiar starting lineup with Zach Edey, Brandon Newman, Mason Gillis and Fletcher Loyer.
This is what I mean with Braden Smith. But the kid is so tough. I just visited his dad, showed him, and his dad called to Braden and asked if heβs ok. Braden looks up there and sneers: βYeah.β
