Delbarton, Mendham capture team plaques at Morris County Championships

Aidan Nevistich and Collin Boler had a plan. It was simple, really.

Boler, the Morris County cross country champion, would "do all the work," setting a slow pace in the 1,600 meters. Nevistich would follow, trying to hold off challengers. Nevistich would kick, and Delbarton would finish first and second, piling up points.

It worked to perfection, with Nevistich inching out his teammate by a hundredth of a second.

Delbarton claimed the Morris County team track and field championship on Tuesday, the school's fifth overall. The Mendham girls' pack piled up points to earn its first team title since 2013.

"Collin did all the work. That was the game plan," said Nevistich, a senior from Madison, who returned to track in the spring after dealing with a fractured back and shin splints as a freshman and sophomore.

"The last 50 meters, I tried to get quiet and sneaky. I knew he had a little bit in the tank. I leaned a little at the end."

Boler rebounded to capture the 600 and 1,000 meters. His twin brother, Brian Boler, returned from injury to finish first in the 3,200 meters.

Delbarton senior Jeffrey Cianfrocca cleared 5-foot-10 to win the high jump.

"I didn't care if either of us won, just get the points and conserve energy for other races," said Collin Boler, a junior from Chatham. "I'm notoriously bad at hearing people behind me. I try to give it everything I've got, and pretend there's someone behind me."

Mendham multiples

Mendham finished first in just two girls events on Tuesday: senior Madison Orlins in the 3,200 and 4x400 to wrap up the meet. But the Minutemen piled up plenty of points by running as a pack.

Orlins and senior Megan Smith went 1-2 in the longest race. Seniors Ava Augustine, Grace Vives, Orlins and Smith took second, third, fourth and sixth behind Chatham senior Sarah Petitjean in the 1,600. Augustine and Vives went 2-3 in the 1,000, again behind Petitjean.

Sophomore Anna Shaw and senior Julianna Marran were third and fourth in the 600, as well as part of the 4x4 with senior Grace Higgins and freshman Violet Sloan.

"It's really helpful, because there's always someone to run with," Orlins said. "We all run the mile, so we have that community, but we all have our own events. It's comforting to have them in the races."

Petitjean appreciated having the competition to push her on to her first county titles in track. She had won the Morris County and the NJAC-Large crowns during cross country.

"I did it in cross country, and it feels good, but I think I'm more of a track person," said Petitjean, who signed a National Letter of Intent with Elon University in North Carolina.

"I was pleasantly surprised in cross country, but I owe this to myself. It's hard, because you definitely want to continue that, but you don't know how much you can give every season. They wear you down."

History at Parsippany Hills

Amanda Hoffman's goal for the season was to win the Morris County title in the 600 meters. She succeeded, crossing the line in 1:42.16.

Hoffman also made history, becoming Parsippany Hills' first female indoor county champion on the track. The Vikings' other girls winners were Angie Rosamilia in the shot put in 1998 and 1999, and the 1995 mile relay.

"I heard a lot of people behind me, so I didn't want to slow down," Hoffman said. "I've been outkicked before, so I didn't slow down until I'd already won. I don't really know how to feel yet. It was really unexpected. It's really exciting, but also really shocking too."

More than medals

The Morris County Track & Field Championships are held at Drew University on January 18, 2022. Jordan Robinson of Morristown places second in the high jump.

Morristown senior Jordan Robinson is a social butterfly, even with her competitors. In fact, she's determined to make most of them friends.

Robinson finished first in three events at the Morris County Championships, leaving with gold in the 55 and 300 meters, and silver in the high jump. Robinson and Chatham junior Elsa Spoor each cleared 5-foot-2, but Spoor took first on misses.

"So long as I did my best, that's what I really care about. The medal's just an additive," said Robinson, who also anchored the Colonials' fifth-place 4x400.

"The people next to you are the ones who are going to help you get across the finish line. That's what I'm here for: to make connections. It's always friendly competition."
