You Can Live in Sicily Rent-Free for One Whole Year, Thanks to Airbnb

That's right—from now until February 18th, anyone aged 18 years or older can apply to live in the abode for one entire year without having to pay rent. All you have to do is fill out your information and answer a few questions here—and voilà, you may be on your way to living the Sicilian dream!
Known as the 1 Euro House, the previously decayed dwelling—which is a three-floor building—has been transformed into a modern oasis, complete with scenic views of the Italian comune of Sambuca di Sicilia. After all, with countless companies still offering employees the option to work from home, why not take full advantage and move to the Italian countryside? Plus, you can bring one other person to live with you!
Sambuca has become known for its incredibly affordable houses, all of which are part of the 1 Euro House Campaign, which was created in an effort to promote the cultural heritage of this village at a time when its population is declining. (Just 6,000 people live here!)
“The beauty of this campaign is that it gives a second chance not just to an abandoned heritage home in the heart of our village—it’s also a second chance to the person who moves into it," said Leonardo Ciaccio, the Mayor of Sambuca di Sicilia, in a statement. "We see it as a designer makeover for the house and the Host. We’re looking for someone who wants to live with the local population and participate in all the important moments of the community, from the grape harvest to olive picking and we can't wait to welcome whoever gets selected!”
Ready to make the move to Sambuca? The one-year residence period will begin on June 30th, and you have until February 18th to apply—which you can do here.
