Division I Girls Title Game: St. Mary’s 56, Oak Ridge 45, Final

Recap: Slow to this action as we were talking to coaches and referees and administrators about all things hoops.

St. Mary’s is doing what St. Mary’s does, and that’s play suffocating, relentless defense with traps, double teams, rebounds and steals. The Rams have done this for years in winning a section-record 103 playoff games over the decades, a good many of those under coach Tom Gonsalves since 2003. St. Mary’s has won 13 consecutive section banners spanning different divisions, including seven in succession in D-I.

Oak Ridge is also a storied program, having won the 2010 CIF State D-I title and 601 games under coach Steve White.

While most every other school has struggled to shoot from 3-point land at Golden 1, it hasn’t been an issue for the Rams. They have hit 4 of 7 bombs and Oak Ridge 2 of 6. Teagan Brown has seven points and seven boards for Oak Ridge.

3rd quarter: St. Mary’s has seized control, leading 40-26 with 2:01 to go in this period. Oak Rodge shooting 33 percent and St. Mary’s 55 percent , including 4 of 8 from 3. Brown cuts it to 42-30 for Oak Ridge with a jumper. End of quarter: St. Mary’s 42-30.

4th quarter: St. Mary’s is on its way, leading 52-39 with 1:27 to go. It’s final, and the Rams win their 13th consecutive title and eighth in a row in D-I. Defense, defense, defense, balanced offense, athletes, focus and a great coach in Tom Gonsalves are the ingredients.

Division lll Boys Title Game: Vanden 57, Central Catholic 41, Final

First quarter: Vanden built a three-point lead early in the Division lll Championship game. The Vikings are playing fast and running the floor well in the first quarter and have an eight point lead after one.

Division III Girls Title Game: Christian Brothers 50, Merced 33, final

Fourth quarter: Christian Brothers absolutely cruised, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor to take the Division III title. Bria Shine had 11 points and 17 rebounds as the Falcons dominated the inside game.

Third quarter: The Falcons kept their looooong run going to start the second half as Merced finally scored a bucket to stop the bleeding with four minutes left. Trailing by 19, the Bears have a long way to go to get back in this game. Neither team scored in the final 3:30 of the quarter.

Second quarter: Both teams continued to play lock-down defense as neither squad had a player near double figures by the middle of the quarter. But then the Falcons got hot, going on a 15-4 run to rack up a 27-17 halftime lead. Sarah Jackson had seven points and Karli Cooper and Faith Muchreu both had six to lead Christian Brothers.

First quarter: Shooting was a problem for both teams as both teams were well under 40 percent early in the game.

Voice of reason: The public address voice for this game is Steve Gill, who knows a bit about Christian Brothers. He is a graduate of Christian Brothers, where he and his brothers played baseball for their father, Joe Gill. Steve Gill is also the long-time PA voice for Sacramento City College events.

Division V Boys Title Game: Brookside Christian 69, Bradshaw Christian 48, Final

Fourth quarter: Brookside put away the game with a timely 3-pointer by Geronimo De La Rosa and plenty of defense. De La Rosa scored 25 points and had seven rebounds and six assists in the game.

Third quarter: Brookside maintained its healthy halftime margin midway through the quarter as both teams struggled to make shots. The Knights led 51-35 after three quarters.

Second quarter: A buzzer beater by Gabriella Biittner pushed Colfax’s lead to 26 at the half. Colfax has taken 40 shots compared to Golden Sierra’s 19. Grace Bliss has scored 17 for the Falcons now, more than the entire Grizzlies squad. Jazzy Owens has chipped in 10. Sarah Kuhl has 6 points and 4 rebounds for Golden Sierra.

First quarter: Colfax took control early against Golden Sierra. The Falcons went on a 14-point run as part of a dominant showing against the Grizzlies. Colfax senior Grace Bliss has dropped 11 already, matching Golden Sierra’s total. Junior guard Natalie Lundberg has contributed 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Sophomore Rebecca Reed leads Golden Sierra with 5 points.

Background checks: Colfax is used to being in title games. This is its 15th title game appearance since 1983 with the aim of winning the program’s 11th blue banner. Colfax has 86 section playoff victories, second all time to the 103 of St. Mary’s of Stockton, a longtime national power.

Golden Sierra? This is unfamiliar turf for the Grizzlies of Garden Valley. Their only title appearance was in 1984, a loss to Colfax, which went on to repeat as CIF State Division III champions.

Colfax opened in 1959 and continues to excel in athletics across the board despite declining enrollment in a region that is now longer growing. Golden Sierra opened in 1980. Its greatest player is Kristy Ryan from the 1980s, who went on to a Hall of Fame career at Sacramento State with scoring and rebounding records.

Blistering Bliss: Bliss is one of the all-time greats in Colfax history, having scored more than 2,200 points as a four-year starter. She is headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on a track and field scholarship. It’s no wonder. She’s the quickest one on the court. She now has 24 points.
