A new Drake Relays record in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase

Nike athlete Daniel Michalski broke a 45-year-old Drake Relays record on Thursday, winning the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:28.93. That broke the record of 8:31.02, set by Brigham Young's Henry Marsh in 1977.

Michalski's time is also the third-fastest by an American this year and the 11th fastest in the world. He finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer.

Behind Michalski, Iowa State's Gable Sieperda finished second, in 8:45.31, which is the 69th fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the world this year. It's also, unofficially, the 25th fastest collegiate time this season.

Sieperda's time is, officially, the fastest 3,000-meter steeplechaby a collegian at the Drake Relays since Dmitry Drozdov clocked an 8:39.66 in 1994.

Southeast Polk's Abu Sama wins boys long jump

Abu Sama needed a good third jump just to qualify for the finals of the boys long jump competition on Thursday.

Turns out, Sama's third jump won him the whole thing.

Sama, a junior from Southeast Polk, won the boys long jump competition at the Drake Relays with a long jump of 23-11. That long jump came on his third attempt, vaulting him from 18th to first, where he stayed the rest of the competition.

Sama beat out Lisbon's Kole Becker, who notched a 23-3.25 on his sixth jump to seize second. Those two prevailed in a heated competition. Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Colton Kronfeld took third (22-3.50), followed by Cedar Falls' Trey Campbell (22-0.5) and Dubuque Senior's Sam Akins (21-11.25).

Southeast Polk's Abu Sama competes in the long jump during the Drake Relays, on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at Drake Stadium, in Des Moines.

In doing so, Ramsey set a Drake Relays record with his time, which also ranks Washburn ran his final lap in 59.5 seconds to nearly run down Ramsay on the homestretch.

Maddie Olson, Sheldon's junior high-jumper, came into Thursday's girls high jump competition as the state leader, but Bishop Heelan senior Taylor Jochum made her work for a Drake Relays title.

As such, Olson finished first while Jochum took second. Charles City's Keely Collins and Unity Christian's Molly Zylstra tied for third.

Behind Whalen, Linn-Mar's McKade Jelinek took second, at 181-01, followed by LeMars' Brandon VanderSluis (180-06), Muscatine's Nolan Recker (178), and Waukee Northwest's Lucas Morrison (177-03) in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
