Recap: Clemson football wins 41-10 over Georgia Tech in 2022 season opener

Finally, it's Clemson football's turn.

After watching nearly everyone else in the country open their seasons, fourth-ranked Clemson and Georgia Tech will try to score a Week 1 win Monday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

That will be proving ground for Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei after his sophomore slump and an offensive line that is expected to be much improved. Meanwhile, the Tigers should have one of the best defenses in the country.

Clemson's streak of six straight ACC championships came to an end last year, although the Tigers went 10-3 with a bowl victory. They were still figuring things out in the third game when they held on for a 14-8 victory against Georgia Tech in Memorial Stadium. In 2020, Clemson wore out the Jackets, 73-7.

KLUBNIK'S DEBUT: Clemson football QB Cade Klubnik makes collegiate debut late in Georgia Tech game

Fourth quarter

FINAL:  Clemson 41, Georgia Tech 10

1:35 left:  What can you say? Cade Klubnik throws a 3-yard touchdown pass to Will Taylor on a crisp drive. Klubnik was 4-6 for 50 yards on the drive.

5:07 left:  Here comes Cade Klubnik.

6:27 left:  Will Shipley with his second touchdown run of the day. He hasn't had a great statistical day but has been good in short yardage and goal-to-go.

7:31 left:  Bryan Bresee and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. combine for a sack. And ANOTHER PUNT BLOCK! Wade Woodaz gets the blocked punt this time, Clemson's second punt block of the game.

9:10 left:  D.J. Uiagalelei is sacked on third down. B.T. Potter's field goal is good. Clemson 27, Georgia Tech 10.

10:59 left:  Georgia Tech goes for it on 4th and 2 from its own 42, and Myles Murphy pushes a GT lineman into the ball carrier for a TFL. Clemson ball with great field position.

13:08 left:  D.J. Uiagalelei makes a good throw down the right sideline to Davis Allen for a first down. But Beaux Collins drops an over-the-shoulder throw on the next third down. UIagalelei has looked better since the three-and-out to start the second half. Consistency an issue for Clemson's offense across the board, but this isn't as ugly as last year's Georgia Tech game in the elements.

Third quarter

8 seconds left:  Luke Benson drops a pass on third down, and Georgia Tech will punt. Keith Maguire was closing in.

1:18 left:  Touchdown Tigers! D.J. Uiagalelei designed run over the left side for a 9-yard touchdown. Clemson 24, Georgia Tech 10.

Tigers outgaining Yellow Jackets 120-64 in the third quarter.

2:35 left:  Clemson getting first downs and the pace quickens. Antonio Williams YAC for a first down, then two Kobe Pace runs set up first and goal.

3:05 left:  Confident throw by Uiagalelei over the middle to Davis Allen for a first down.

3:40 left:  Will Shipley misses his pass-pro block and redeems himself, taking a Uiagalelei lateral for a first down. Wild play.

4:50 left:  Georgia Tech three-and-out. Clemson ball.

5:10 left: B.T. Potter adds to Clemson's lead with a short field goal. Clemson 17, Georgia Tech 10.

7:00 left:  Jake Briningstool has one of the few positive downfield catches over the middle, and GT's Charlie Thomas is called for targeting after review.

9:40 left:  Clemson gets a defensive pass interference call on third down. Easy call. The Tigers really needed that.

9:47 left:  Touchdown Georgia Tech. E.J. Jenkins, the South Carolina transfer, beats Andrew Mukuba to the back corner of the end zone. He was picked on a couple times that drive. 10 straight points for the Yellow Jackets. Clemson 14, Georgia Tech 10.

9:54 left:  Nearly an end zone interception by Jeremiah Trotter Jr.

11:21 left:  Clemson not tackling well in the first defensive drive of the third quarter.

11:49 left:  Quick slant is good for a first down. GT at the Clemson 27.

11:54 left:  Georgia Tech is back in Clemson territory, but it has a fourth down decision at the Clemson 37.

13:20 left:  Uiagalelei is pressured on a slow-developing third down play, and Clemson will punt on a three-and-out. Clemson's offense looks more like last season's offense thru one half and a possession. Running game is in neutral, and the passing game lacks explosiveness.

Halftime

Some first-half stats...

D.J. Uiagalelei:  11-15, 108 yards and a passing TD; 19 rushing yards

Will Shipley:  14 receiving yards, 11 rushing yards, rushing TD

Beaux Collins:  3 catches, 54 yards and a touchdown

Clemson's defense:  5 tackles for a loss, 130 yards allowed

K.J. Henry and Bryan Bresee:  1.5 tackles for a loss each

Second quarter

Halftime:  Clemson 14, Georgia Tech 3. Yellow Jackets happy to let clock run in the final minute.

43 seconds left:  Kobe Pace is short of the first down, but there's a penalty. Targeting penalty on GT. We'll see if that stands under review.

After review, there is no targeting.

51 seconds left:  Uiagalelei needs to step up in the pocket there. Stood right into the pressure.

1:08 left:  Antonio Williams' first catch is in the flat for eight yards.

1:15 left:  Cannot start a drive with a delay of game.

1:15 left:  Jude Kelley hits from 45 yards. Clemson 14, Georgia Tech 3.

1:20 left:  Clemson calls timeout after a third down stop of a Jeff Sims carry. Georgia Tech has 4th and 4 from the Tigers' 28. Clemson has one timeout left.

2:02 left:  Bryan Bresee sack.

2:27 left:  Nate Wiggins could have (should have) had a pick-six. But Tech is back in Clemson territory.

3:52 left:  Best drive of the night for D.J. Uiagalelei. He rolls to the right and finds Beaux Collins in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown. Clemson 14, Georgia Tech no score.

3:59 left:  Davis Allen drops a pass near the goal line. Could have been a TD.

5:10 left:  Uiagalelei runs inside the GT 10. First and goal, Clemson.

5:55 left:  Good throw by Uiagalelei to Beaux Collins from left hash to right numbers for 26 yards. Then a 14-yard catch-and-run by Will Shipley.

6:33 left:  Joseph Ngata's first catch of the day is for seven yards.

7:15 left:  Two pressures and a wonderful tackle from Trenton Simpson later, Georgia Tech's drive is halted. 50-yard field goal attempt from GT's Jude Kelley is wide right.

8:10 left:  Georgia Tech is on the move. Jeff Sims is in rhythm.

9:53 left:  Touchdown Tigers! Will Shipley runs into the end zone standing up off left end. B.T. Potter's extra point is good. Clemson 7, Georgia Tech 0.

10:32 left:  Uiagalelei slips on third and goal, and Clemson will go for it on fourth down and goal from the GT 2.

12:03 left:  THE PUNT IS BLOCKED! Carson Donnelly blocked the punt, and Brannon Spector returns it inside the GT 10.

12:34 left:  Georgia Tech three-and-out. The offenses are struggling.

14:04 left:  K.J. Henry TFL. Then two GT false starts in reaction to Clemson defensive line shifting.

14:44 left:  Uiagalelei scrambles and throws to Kobe Pace, who is short of a first down. The good news: Aidan Swanson has two punts of 50+ yards.

First quarter

1:15 left:  Georgia Tech has 28 yards on 17 plays.

3:10 left:  D.J. Uiagalelei spends way too much time in the pocket and is sacked on third down. It appears there were open options downfield. Clemson three-and-out.

5:03 left:  Barrett Carter TFL.

5:44 left:  Tre Williams TFL.

6:57 left:  Georgia Tech goes for it on fourth down near its own 38 and Jeff Sims sneaks past the first down marker.

8:57 left:  D.J. Uiagalelei fumbles, and a pair of GT defenders wrestle the ball away from Joseph Ngata to recover the ball. It is under review, but Uiagalelei has to do better in protecting the ball. Ngata may have had the recovery for a few moments as the Yellow Jackets tried to pry it away.

Ruling of a fumble and Georgia Tech recovery stands.

9:57 left:  Beaux Collins with his first catch of the year, and he makes some yards after the catch. Clemson into GT territory.

11:32 left:  Good tackle by Barrett Carter on a GT receiver on third down. Three-and-out. Will Taylor is the punt returner, and Sheridan Jones runs into him. No harm, no foul as the ball is downed by GT.

13:25 left:  D.J. Uiagalelei mishandles a high snap on third down, and Clemson will punt. Aidan Swanson will have the first punt of 2022.

14:52 left:  Play No. 1 from scrimmage for Georgia Tech is a downfield shot that is intercepted by Andrew Mukuba. Can't ask for more than that. Clemson starts on its own 27.

15:00 left:  Clemson wins the coin toss and will defer.
