Live recap: Sacramento State football blows out Colorado State

The Colorado State football team finishes its 2022 nonconference schedule with a unique matchup.

The Rams (0-3) are hosting an FCS team in Sacramento State on Saturday, Sept. 24 (2 p.m. Mountain kickoff). But this is no FCS pushover.

Sac State is ranked No. 6 in the coaches poll and boasts an explosive offense. The Hornets (2-0) are averaging 46.5 points per game in their first two contests and are racking up 500 yards per game.

Coloradoan reporter Kevin Lytle will have updates through the day as CSU hosts its annual Ag Day and orange out.

Postgame Thoughts

In Lytle's postgame column, he writes that CSU fans hope this is as bad as it gets for Jay Norvell and the Rams.

Lytle:CSU football fans hope this is rock bottom for Rams

Final

Sacramento State 41, Colorado State 10.

3 takeaways:CSU football blown out by Sacramento State

Rams fall to 0-4 while Hornets move to 3-0.

Another Sac State touchdown

This one has long been over but Sac State adds another TD to go up 41-10 with 2:47 left in the game.

Sacramento State field goal

Sac State's Kyle Sentkowski hits a 47-yard field goal to put Sacramento State up 34-10 with 14:50 to go in the game.

End third quarter

CSU trails Sacramento State 31-10. Sac State 3rd and 6 from CSU's 29 to start the fourth.

At least there's beer...

CSU fans seem to be enjoying beverages, at least.

Sacramento State TD

Sacramento State running QB Asher O'Hara goes over-the-top for a 1-yard touchdown to give Sacramento State a 31-10 lead with 4:59 to go in the third quarter.

Fumble proves costly.

CSU fumble

On first drive of half, CSU goes for it on 4th and 1 from own 38 and A'Jon Vivens fumbles and Sac State recovers at CSU's 32.

CSU forces punt

Good news for CSU to start the second half as the Rams force a punt on the first Sacramento State drive, just the second punt of the day.

Rams ball at own 13 and it will still be Fowler-Nicolosi at QB with Millen out.

Halftime

Kyle Sentkowski hits a 45-yard field goal on the final play of the half to give Sacramento State a 24-10 halftime lead.

New QB:Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi replaces injured Clay Millen

Fowler-Nicolosi touchdown strike

How about Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi? On a 4th and 3 inside CSU territory he hits Ty McCullouch while under pressure then on the next play fires a 52-yard strike to Tory Horton for a touchdown. Fowler-Nicolosi had his first career completion and first touchdown on that drive. Not bad for the true freshman.

Huge play. CSU cuts Sac State lead to 21-10 with 1:17 left in first half.

Jack Howell interception

After missing one series after being hurt, Jack Howell re-enters with a taped up ankle and he picks off Sacramento State to give CSU ball at its own 11.

Howell limped off after the INT, but a huge red zone play for Howell and the defense.

Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi enters at QB

With 6:25 to go in the half backup QB Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi enters the game with Clay Millen being looked at on the sideline. Millen has been sacked 24 times this season.

Another quick score

The landslide impact CSU keeps suffering from happens again. After the Sac State score, the Rams go 3-and-out, give up a 44-yard punt return back into the red zone and two plays later Sacramento State scores.

Sac State lead is 21-3 with 6:25 to go in the half.

Tip ball touchdown

On third and goal for Sacramento State a pass fired into the middle was tipped way high into the air and Sac State receiver Pierre Williams grabbed the jump ball for a TD.

Sac State leads CSU 14-3 with 9:11 left in the first half.

Jack Howell injured

With 9:34 left in the first half, Jack Howell went down on a play in the red zone and slowly limped off. He's been arguably CSU's best player this season.

One to watch. A significant injury would be very bad news for CSU.

CSU field goal

CSU can't get in the end zone after the deep ball. Three runs after first-and-goal at the 7 went nowhere and Rams settle for a 24-yard field goal from Michael Boyle.

It's the first, first-half points of the season for the Rams. Sac State lead is 7-3 with 13:31 to go in the half.

End first quarter

Sacramento State leads Colorado State 7-0 after first quarter.

The Rams have a second-and-goal from the 7 to start the second following a deep ball from Clay Millen to Tory Horton for 56 yards.

Sacramento State strikes first

As has been the case much of the season, Colorado State trails early. Sacramento State goes 74 yards in eight plays and scores on a 6-yard TD run from Asher O'Hara.

Sac State had a 32-yard screen play on the drive to quickly move down the field. It's 7-0 Sac State with 7:38 to go in the first quarter.

Starting offensive line changes

The starting OL for CSU is Jacob Gardner (LT), Dante Bivens (LG), George Miki-Han (C), Gray Davis (RG), Owen Snively (RT). It's the fourth different starting unit on the season in four games. Miki-Han makes first start. Bailey had the first carry of the game.

CSU gets the ball first and, as a reminder, the Rams haven't scored a first-half point this season.

Injury updates

Some notes on the CSU football gameday lineup.

Cornerback Greg Laday was not dressed in uniform during warmups after being injured last week. Safety Henry Blackburn did not appear to be in uniform in warmups either. He didn't practice this week due to injury.

Running backs A'Jon Vivens and David Bailey did participate in warmups. We'll see if they're available to play. Bailey dressed last week but did not play and was there just for emergency need. Offensive lineman Dontae Keys did warmup but is another who may not play.

The legend Sonny Lubick

Legendary CSU football coach Sonny Lubick is out on campus for Ag Day. Still is probably the most popular person at CSU.

Lineup shuffling

Three CSU receivers — Melquan Stovall, Dante Wright and E.J. Scott — have left the program since the season began. That means shuffling of the rotation.

Tory Horton is still CSU's No. 1 receiver, but freshman Justus Ross-Simmons is expected to start at the "X" position and Ty McCullouch will start in the slot. Freshman Louis Brown will be the fourth receiver. Freshman Mekhi Fox could be in the rotation as well.
