CHATTANOOGA – Trent Dilfer needed three years to turn Lipscomb Academy's football program around and win its first state championship in 14 years.

Lipscomb Academy shut out CPA for the second time this season, beating the Lions 27-0 in the Division II-AA BlueCross Bowl on Thursday at Chattanooga's Finley Stadium.

The win is the program's first TSSAA football championship since 2007 and fourth overall. It comes a year after Lipscomb Academy lost 35-28 in the state championship game.

The Mustangs (12-1) shut down the Lions' run-heavy offense that ran at will in last year's championship. CPA (11-3) gained 424 rushing yards in the 2020 Division II-AA BlueCross Bowl, but was held to 133 yards this year. And Langston Patterson and Cade Law — who ran for 191 and 168 yards respectively last year — was held to 104 yards and 28 yards respectively this year.

Meanwhile, Lipscomb Academy's Alex Broome, a DII-AA Mr. Football and Boston College commitment, juked and twisted his way past the Lions' defense. Broome finished with 20 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns — from seven yards and four yards away. His second gave the Mustangs a 20-0 lead with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Broome, the son of Overton coach Arcentae Broome, also had five catches for 23 yards.

Teammate Luther Richesson, a Cincinnati commitment was 17-of-19 passing for 147 yards with a 55-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Spillman. He also had one interception.
