Live updates: CSU football hosts Wyoming in Border War battle for the Bronze Boot

The first matchup between these two teams took place all the way back in 1899.

Nearly every year since then the Colorado State and Wyoming football teams have met in a Border War battle.

Since 1968 the game has also included a traveling trophy on the line, with the teams battling for the Bronze Boot.

The latest edition comes at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022 at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins.

Follow along with this story for live updates from Coloradoan reporter Kevin Lytle from the game.

Final

Wyoming salts most the clock away and CSU's final desperation drive doesn't convert.

Wyoming 14, CSU 13.

4 takeaways: Wyoming grabs Bronze Boot as CSU football wastes chance at upset win

CSU misses field goal

CSU misses a would-be go-ahead field goal attempt from 40 yards with 4:48 to go.

Wyoming lead is still 14-13.

Wyoming takes lead

Two plays after the turnover Wyoming strikes. Clemons hits Alex Brown for a 32-yard TD pass.

After leading basically from the start, CSU now trails. Wyoming is up 14-13 with 10:47 to go.

CSU turnover

CSU's defense forced a stop after the field goal, but on the Wyoming punt Tory Horton muffed it and Wyoming jumped on it at CSU's 18.

There was a penalty on Wyoming after the play, so the drive starts on the 33.

CSU field goal

CSU goes 12 plays for 74 yards in 6:23, but once again the Rams stall in the red zone.

CSU had 1st and goal at the 8 but went nowhere with three runs.

CSU lead is 13-7 after a 24-yard field goal from Boyle. There's 12:55 to go.

End third quarter

A fast-moving quarter and we're on to the fourth.

Huge sequence here. CSU has a 1st and 10 at Wyoming's 18. Rams hold a 10-7 lead.

Wyoming misses field goal

A break for CSU.

Wyoming's first drive of the second half was at times overpowering as the Cowboys ran all over CSU. But the Ram defense holds at its own 20, forcing a field goal attempt.

Wyoming's John Hoyland then pushes the 37-yard attempt wide right. It was a 12 play, 62 yard drive that took 6:24.

But CSU holds 10-7 lead with 4:18 left in third quarter.

Nothing for CSU on first drive

Rams pick up one first down on first drive of third quarter, but no movement of substance. Offense struggling tonight, with offensive line issues prevalent once again.

Good punt from Paddy Turner means Wyoming first drive starts at own 18.

Halftime

CSU 10, Wyoming 7

CSU almost has a magical play to end the half when Tory Horton catches a pass and races around defenders and toward the end zone, but he's pushed out at the 4 after a 40-yard play.

CSU out-gaining Wyoming 167-96. Clemons brought a spark to Wyoming.

Wyoming will kick to start the second half.

Wyoming touchdown

Wyoming backup QB Jayden Clemons leads a big drive.

Clemons, on a 3rd and 2, runs in from 12 yards with 34 seconds left in the half. CSU lead cut to 10-7.

It feels like CSU should be up more, but Rams have missed chances to grow lead and now Cowboys strike back.

Wyoming backup QB in

Wyoming backup QB Jayden Clemons enters in the second quarter. Starter Andrew Peasley has taken several hard hits.

CSU's defense continues to dominate early. Wyoming has just 27 yards of offense with 8:33 to go in the half.

Millen picked off

CSU was driving into Wyoming's red zone with a 48-yard bomb from Clay Millen to Tory Horton.

CSU was at the 18 when Millen fired into the end zone and clearly wasn't on same page as the receiver and he was picked off in the end zone.

Could be a big swing play here. CSU had a chance to go up three scores, instead Wyoming ball at own 20 down 10-0. It also means CSU is now 4-20 in converting red zone chances to TDs.

CSU field goal

CSU fails in the red zone again. The Rams now have just four touchdowns in 19 red zone trips this season.

Despite that, Michael Boyle does hit a 40-yard FG to put CSU up 10-0 with 14:10 until half.

End first quarter

CSU 7, Wyoming 0.

CSU has a 3rd and 8 from the Wyoming 17 to start the second quarter.

Pretty much ideal first 15 minutes for the Rams.

CSU defense big play

Another big play. On Wyoming's second drive, on a third and long Ayden Hector breaks up a pass and Henry Blackburn grabs the ball before it hits the turf for an interception.

First career INT for Blackburn.

CSU ball at own 33 for first offensive drive of the game.

What a start!

This game is off to a flying start!

CSU's defense forces a 3-and-out and Tory Horton, who has looked dangerous on punt returns, makes the first men miss and races to the house for a 72-yard punt return touchdown.

CSU takes a 7-0 lead with 12:48 to go in first quarter.

Kickoff time

Colorado State wins the coin toss and defers.

Wyoming will receive first-half kickoff.

Jersey look

Jay Norvell is a fan of traditional jerseys, so Rams are back in a traditional look. Gold pants, green jersey and normal green and gold lid.

Wyoming is in the yellow pants, white jerseys and white helmets.

Pregame flyover

It's military appreciation and two helicopters flew over the Ram Walk and then landed out near the lagoon on CSU's camps.

Quite the entrance.

Winning in front of fans

Colorado State last won the Bronze Boot in 2020, but that was in an empty Canvas Stadium due to COVID-19 protocols.

That means CSU hasn't celebrated a Border War win in front of home fans since 2014. CSU also won in 2015, in Laramie.

Wyoming has won five of the last six matchups.

Oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi?

Without a doubt this is one of the oldest rivalries in college football and most certainly one of the oldest west of the Mississippi.

CSU's game notes claim "The Border War is the longest continuous rivalry west of the MississippiRiver."

It's close, but that doesn't appear to be true. CSU and Wyoming have played every season since 1946, with a World War II pause where they didn't play in 1943, 1944 or 1945.

It appears the Border War has barely been beaten. Oregon and Oregon State have played every season since 1945, per the record books of each school.

Thin margin and doesn't make a real difference, but it's not quite the oldest ongoing rivalry in the West.

Bronze Boot Run

The Bronze Boot Run concluded Friday night when members of the CSU ROTC finished the nearly 70-mile run from Wyoming's campus to Canvas Stadium on CSU's campus.

Wyoming's ROTC runs the game ball from the campus to the state line, where there's a brief ceremony with the Bronze Boot and both head coaches. Then CSU's ROTC finish the long run. The game ball made a stop at Moby Arena between CSU women's and men's basketball games before finishing at Canvas Stadium.

Unique connection to CSU and Wyoming

Adam Pilapil is one of the youngest assistant coaches in college football. The CSU linebackers coach only finished playing college football in 2018.

Where did he play? Wyoming, of course. It's rare to have people who have been on both sides of the rivalry, but Pilapil now becomes one.

After playing at Wyoming from 2015-18, he'll be on the CSU sideline this week.

Check out this photo from the archives of Pilapil thoroughly enjoying a Border War win in Fort Collins in 2018 as a linebacker for Wyoming.

Wyoming also has someone who has been on both sides. Defensive ends coach Marty English was a CSU assistant from 2012-17

History of the Border War

This is one of the oldest rivalries in college football.

It's a classic, filled with all sorts of tales from both sides of the border. The history is fascinating and the game means so much to so many.
