The Dolphins’ running back situation became more complicated on Tuesday, when Salvon Ahmed was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. His injury is expected to end his season, according to a source.

Receiver Robbie Chosen was moved to the 53-man roster to replace Ahmed.

Ahmed’s move to IR leaves the Dolphins with two healthy running backs: Starter Raheem Mostert and running back Jeff Wilson Jr.

De’Von Achane’s status for Friday’s game at the Jets (3 p.m, Amazon/CBS-4) is very much in question. He left Sunday’s game against the Raiders with a knee injury, after missing a month with an injury to the same knee. Achane doesn’t need surgery, the team said.

According to the team, he would have been able to practice on a limited basis on Tuesday if the team had practiced.

If Achane cannot play on Friday, Miami likely would elevate Darrynton Evans, who was re-signed to the practice squad this week. Evans has rushed for 230 yards on 60 carries (a 3.8 average) in 17 combined games for Tennessee and Chicago. That includes 30 carries for 105 yards with the Bears this season.

Ahmed averaged just 2.8 yards per carry (22 for 61) and has 16 catches for 88 yards, including a touchdown against the Raiders last week.

Wilson, who was a healthy scratch against Las Vegas, missed the first six games with finger and rib injuries and has seven carries for 29 yards this season.

Mostert is averaging 5.3 yards per carry on 131 rushes, with 11 touchdowns.

Rookie running back Chris Brooks, who has been out since sustaining an ankle injury Oct. 15 against Carolina, could be brought back in the next few weeks, Mike McDaniel said.

The Dolphins can bring back two more players who are on IR or the non-football injury list. Brooks, Ahmed, guard Isaiah Wynn (who has a longterm quadriceps injury) and receiver Erik Ezukanma are the four injured players not on the 53-man roster.

As for Chosen, he was cut last week, re-signed to the practice squad and elevated for the Raiders game, catching two passes.

He gives the Dolphins seven receivers on the active roster. Two of those seven -- Chase Claypool and Braxton Berrios -- missed the Las Vegas game with injuries. Berrios was cleared to practice fully this week.

INJURY UPDATE

The Dolphins did not practice Tuesday, but if they had, two would have missed practice, according to the team: tight end Durham Smythe (ankle) and guard Rob Jones (knee).

Several would have been limited on Tuesday: Achane (knee), left tackle Terron Armstead (knee); receivers Chase Claypool (knee) and Tyreek Hill (hand), guards Rob Hunt (hamstring) and Lester Cotton (hip), right tackle Austin Jackson (oblique), running back Raheem Mostert (ankle/knee) and fullback Alec Ingold (foot) would have been limited.

The offensive line issues are worrisome. Jackson has been one of the league’s better right tackles this season; the severity of his ailment is unclear. Cotton has been starting at guard after injuries to Isaiah Wynn and Hunt.

Hunt, who missed the past two games with a hamstring injury, said he will practice on Wednesday, during the team’s only full practice of the week. He was non-committal about his availability for Friday’s game.

Asked if he’s all the way back from the injury, he said Tuesday: “There’s some stuff I want to try out [Wednesday] to get the answer. Today, I feel good. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow with some more intense [work].”

He said he hasn’t had any setbacks with the hamstring.

Hunt hadn’t missed any games before this injury, which was sustained in the Oct. 29 game against New England.

“I take pride in playing every game,” he said. “I’ve been doing that a long time. I pride myself on not being in the training room until this bad little situation.”

He said he was relieved that the hamstring wasn’t torn. “If someone had told me it’s longer than what it has been, I would have been devastated,” he said.

▪ Berrios, who missed the Raiders game with a hamstring injury, would have been able to practice fully on Tuesday had the team practiced, according to the team.

He said he “pushed to play” against Las Vegas: “I wanted to play. Those decisions are a culmination of everybody involved. That’s something we decided as a whole.”

FANGIO WEIGHS IN

▪ Since the start of the 2022 calendar year, new Jets starting quarterback Tim Boyle has six interceptions on his last 59 throws.

He was 7 for 14 for 33 yards, with one interception, after replacing Zach Wilson in last Sunday’s loss to Buffalo. He will start Friday’s game against the Dolphins.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said he’s studying tape of Boyle from earlier in his career. He started three games and lost all of them for Detroit in 2021 and also played for Green Bay and Chicago.

For his career, his has a 50.9 career passer rating, with three touchdowns and nine interceptions.

“He played in preseason [for the Jets], played in Chicago which was the same system,” Fangio said. “He was in Green Bay with coach [Paul] Hackett,” who is the Jets offensive coordinator.

“He knows the system and there’s some video out there. That’s the unknown. When you have a new quarterback, the plan of attack and the way the game is called may change. He is very well versed in the offense they’re running because where he’s been the last few years. He will run their offense, which he’s very capable of doing.”

Why did inside linebacker David Long play just 28 defensive snaps against Las Vegas?

“The personality the game took on,” Fangio said. “We had a good bit of short series. We were going to put in” Andrew Van Ginkel “some.” Van Ginkel played 42 defensive snaps.
