11:05 a.m. Will Muschamp not the only Georgia football staff member making return trip

This is not only a return to South Carolina for former Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp who was already on the field pregame, but two other Georgia staff members who coached under Muschamp also are returning.

Mike Bobo was offensive coordinator and then interim head coach in 2020. He’s now a quality control coach at Georgia.

Bryan McClendon was wide receivers coach from 2016-19 and offensive coordinator those last two seasons.

“I know sometimes you go back to those places, it can be sentimental, emotional, you spent time there, you spent a lot of effort and energy there,” Smart said of Muschamp on his radio show.

No. 6 Georgia 38-35 in 2014

9:25 a.m. Rise and Shine for Georgia Bulldogs

Whether it’s a night game or a noon kickoff, Georgia doesn’t deviate from its pregame meal.

This time there was a 7:15 a.m. wakeup call with players eating at 8 a.m.

On the menu, Smart said on his radio show, players are served steaks but some go for Ramen noodles instead.

“Whenever they’re ready to kick off they can kick off,” offensive tackle Broderick Jones said. “At 6 a.m., I’m going to be ready. No matter what time it is, I’m always ready.”

9:15 a.m. Georgia football WR AD Mitchell and TE Arik Gilbert not expected to go

As seemed to be the direction it was headed, wide receiver AD Mitchell isn’t on the trip due to his sprained ankle. Also not likely to be on the 70-player travel list: tight end Arik Gilbert. That comes from UGASports.com.

Gilbert hasn’t had as big of a role as might have been expected in the first two games behind Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington.

“It's really based on Arik's performance, it's not really based on those guys,” Smart said. “We like to have depth at those positions, but that's all based on how he practices and how he carries over the game plan.”

The LSU transfer was away from the team last season due to personal issues.

“I’m always a lot more concerned with Arik’s well-being mentally, than his well-being just on knowing assignments and what to do,” Smart said in August.
