They're back on the First Coast: One week after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles to drop to 2-2 for the 2022 NFL season, the Jacksonville Jaguars returned to TIAA Bank Field to take on the Houston Texans in an AFC South battle.

The Jaguars were fighting to end an eight-game losing streak against the Texans, and tried to retain at least a share of the division lead through Week 5. This was be Doug Pederson's second home game as the Jaguars' head coach.

The game included a matchup of two of the starting quarterbacks from the 2021 draft class, with the Jaguars' No. 1 overall selection Trevor Lawrence facing off against the Texans' third-rounder, Davis Mills. Sunday's game was Lawrence's first since his 23rd birthday earlier this week.

For University of Florida football fans, a familiar face returned to TIAA Bank Field. Texans running back Dameon Pierce, a fourth-round NFL Draft selection averaging more than five yards per carry with Houston, played college football with the Gators.

4:20 p.m. | Three takeaways from Jacksonville Jaguars messy 13-6 loss to Houston Texans

The Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) lost for a ninth straight time to the Houston Texans (1-3-1), falling 13-6 on Sunday in a sloppy game for the second straight week.

4 p.m. | FINAL: Texans 13, Jaguars 6

Trevor Lawrence's final heave comes up well short of the end zone and is picked off by Desmond King. The Jags drop to 2-3 on the season in a disappointing loss to the NFL's last winless team.

3:55 p.m. | Three-and-out for Texans

The Jaguars are, barely, still alive. They take over after a three-and-out and a punt with 41 seconds left and 88 yard

3:51 p.m. | Jaguars' drive ends at midfield

Four snaps from the 50. Four incompletions.

Travis Etienne had a bad drop on first down, Trevor Lawrence overshot an open Evan Engram on second down, the third-down pass was swatted down and Lawrence misfired out of bounds on fourth down.

The Texans look like they're about to get their first win of 2022, and the Jaguars are on the verge of dropping to 2-3.

3:46 p.m. | Two-minute warning

That's the two-minute warning. The Jaguars, trailing 13-6, have advanced to midfield with two minutes to go. A pair of nice catches by Marvin Jones have sparked this drive.

3:41 p.m. | Touchdown Texans: Dameon Pierce pushes Houston in front

Houston won the challenge, and one play later, Dameon Pierce stormed into the end zone from 1 yard. The Jaguars are in trouble.

It came from a costly penalty. The Jaguars had pinned Houston back into a third-and-20 when rookie Travon Walker made not one but two mistakes, first jumping offside and then slinging Davis Mills to the ground by his neck after the whistle. That extended a seemingly-doomed Texans drive.

Not a lot of highlights today, but Houston wide receiver Nico Collins came up with two: A leaping grab over Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell to convert a third down and advance the Texans into Jacksonville territory. Then, after Walker's penalty, he lunged for a diving catch in front of Campbell. On another third-and-long, Mills floated a pass to Jordan Akins for a first down, and Pierce plowed through a pack of Jaguars to the 2 to set up the touchdown.

Texans 13, Jaguars 6, 3:11 4th.

3:37 p.m. | Doug Pederson challenges: Was it a fumble on 1?

The Texans might be driving for a game-winner. But the ball got jarred loose from Houston's Dameon Pierce on the 1, and Chad Muma recovered for Jacksonville. Officials ruled Pierce down. Doug Pederson doesn't agree, and tossed the challenge flag.

Big decision coming.

3:20 p.m. | Quick three-and-out for Jaguars

Just an ugly possession for the Jaguars. From a 12-men-on-the-field penalty to a high pass from Trevor Lawrence to a drop by Jamal Agnew, the Jags went nowhere on that series.

Fortunately for the home team, Logan Cooke's 63-yard punt pinned the Texans deep.

3:14 p.m. | Texans go three-and-out

That's a sack by Foye Oluokun to begin the possession, and the Texans didn't recover from that. A solid performance continues from the Jaguars' defense.

Houston punted the ball clear out of the end zone for the touchback, so the Jaguars will take over on their own 20. Running out of possessions to find a winner in this one.

3:10 p.m. | Jaguars come up empty again in Houston territory

No picks from Trevor Lawrence on that drive, but still a less-than-satisfactory ending.

The quarterback picked up a couple of first downs with a pass to Marvin Jones and then a scramble. On third down inside Houston territory, Lawrence threw short to Evan Engram, who was downed at the 38 just short of the chains. The Jaguars went for fourth-and-1, but James Robinson was stacked up at the line. It's Houston's ball.

3:03 p.m. | End of third quarter: Jaguars 6, Texans 6

Into the fourth quarter. Will there be any touchdowns at all in this game?

2:58 p.m. | Texans' 13-play drive stalls out

That was a long, long drive to not get across midfield.

Starting from their own 2, Houston converted three consecutive third downs, including a third-and-7 when Foye Oluokun missed a chance to down Rex Burkhead inside the 5. However, Oluokun came through later, making the stop on Houston's third-and-short near the 50. Lovie Smith elected to pass up the chance to go for fourth-and-1, punting instead.

The Jaguars will take over inside their own 10. The third quarter is almost through already.

2:47 p.m. | Interception: Derek Stingley Jr. picks off Trevor Lawrence in end zone

The turnover bug bites again: Trevor Lawrence rolls right and tries a high-risk throw into the end zone, where it's picked off by Derek Stingley Jr. of the Texans. That spoiled an otherwise excellent march inside the 10 to open the half.

Lawrence had started the half in excellent form with a 29-yard pass to Evan Engram across midfield, then connected with Marvin Jones for another first down. But that pass will bring back bad memories for the second-year quarterback.

2:40 p.m. | Jaguars, Texans return for second half

The teams are back out for the second half. Jamal Agnew is deep to return the kickoff.

2:26 p.m. | HALFTIME: Jaguars 6, Texans 6

That's the end of the first half at TIAA Bank Field.

2:25 p.m. | Field goal: Riley Patterson kick ties score

A nice pass lit the spark for the Jaguars' best drive of the afternoon, but the Jags had to settle for three and a second-quarter tie.

First, Trevor Lawrence delivered an excellent throw over the middle to Evan Engram to pick up a chunk of yardage to the Jacksonville 40 in time for the two-minute warning. Then, Travis Etienne ran and spun to midfield, and two more Lawrence passes to James Robinson and Dan Arnold moved the ball inside the red zone.

Then, a disappointing ending for the Jags' possession: A lot of time ticked away after a short pass, then after a timeout, Lawrence passed to Etienne on a play wiped out by a Jawaan Taylor hold. On third down, Etienne caught a pass over the middle and lost the ball after a hit, and Jalen Pitre recovered for Houston, though officials ruled the play incomplete on a replay review. From there, Riley Patterson converted from 45 yards to tie things up.

Jaguars 6, Texans 6, 0:06 2nd.

2:04 p.m. | Field goal: Texans take lead on Ka'imi Fairbairn kick

Dameon Pierce is beginning to get more carries for Houston, and that's a challenge for the Jaguars. The Houston running back stood out as both rusher and receiver on that drive, advancing the ball inside the Jacksonville 35.

But a delay of game flag disrupted the Houston possession, and Davis Mills eventually threw incomplete out of bounds on third down. The Texans summoned kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn again, and his field goal attempt from 51 yards sailed through the uprights. The Jaguars are going to have to play from behind.

Texans 6, Jaguars 3, 3:23 1st.

1:55 p.m. | Jaguars turn over on downs

Nice start for the Jaguars, not-so-nice finish. Trevor Lawrence sparked that drive with his best throw of the game, a strike on the move to Marvin Jones for a pick-up of 37 yards.

But the Jaguars' drive ran out of gas in Houston territory. Lawrence had a second-down pass batted down, James Robinson picked up a few yards on third down and then Desmond King broke up a pass for Christian Kirk on fourth down. The ball goes over to Houston.

1:45 p.m. | Field goal Houston: Ka'imi Fairbairn knots game with 50-yard kick

Houston is starting to find a rhythm on the offensive side, and it starts with former University of Florida running back Dameon Pierce. The rookie carried the Texans' offense across midfield.

From there, though, the Jags' defense stiffened, denying Rex Burkhead on second down and then Pierce on third down with a firm tackle from Devin Lloyd. That led to a 50-yard field goal from Ka'imi Fairbairn, tying the score.

Jaguars 3, Texans 3, 12:24 2nd.

1:40 p.m. | End of first quarter: Jaguars 3, Texans 0

A superb first quarter for the Jacksonville defense. The offense still has work to do.

1:35 p.m. | Jaguars on board first with Riley Patterson field goal

It's the Travis Etienne Show out there for the Jaguars, and this one led to points.

Etienne started the drive with another big gain, a short toss from Trevor Lawrence that went for 19 yards across midfield. Then a combination of passes to Chris Manhertz and James Robinson rushed advanced the Jaguars inside the Houston 10.

There, the Jaguars' drive broke down again. Trevor Lawrence threw over everyone on second down and threw away under heavy pressure on third down. That led to Riley Patterson's 26-yard field goal.

Jaguars 3, Texans 0, 1:22 1st.

1:26 p.m. | Texans punt after short series

Davis Mills has his own accuracy issues today. The Texans' quarterback missed on a second-down pass, and the Jaguars sent a blitz from Foye Oluokun to rush Mills into a third-down incompletion. Jamal Agnew ran the ensuing punt out to the Jacksonville 33.

It's a punt-fest early at TIAA Bank Field.

1:20 p.m. | Travis Etienne big runs not enough on Jaguars drive

Travis Etienne is on fire early. Trevor Lawrence is not.

Etienne rushed for 18 and 30 yards on consecutive plays to get out of rotten field position and cross midfield. But Lawrence was off target again, overshooting Marvin Jones over the middle on a pass that could have led to an interception. So Doug Pederson called for the punting unit, and Logan Cooke delivered a punt that will pin the Texans inside their own 5.

1:13 p.m. | Texans' drive stalls quickly, Jags pinned deep

Houston isn't moving the ball for any distance of note. The Texans did get the ball across midfield, but Davis Mills misfired on a pass over the middle to Rex Burkhead and Houston punted the ball away.

Bad news for the Jaguars, though: They'll begin this possession on their own 1.

1:08 p.m. | Three-and-out for Jaguars, too

The offense isn't exactly clicking yet. Trevor Lawrence had Zay Jones over the middle for first-down yardage on third down, but the QB's pass appeared to come in a bit high and Jones wasn't able to hold on. A missed opportunity for the Jaguars and a punt coming up.

1:05 p.m. | Nice start for Jaguars D: Houston goes three-and-out

A solid start for Jacksonville on pass defense. Adam Gotsis deflected a first-down pass that Foye Oluokun nearly picked off, a second-down pass gained only 3 and Davis Mills threw incomplete on third down on a pass breakup from Darious Williams. That's a three-and-out.

Trevor Lawrence and the offense are going to work now.

1 p.m. | Jaguars, Texans ready for kickoff

It's kickoff time. The Jaguars are ready to begin their second home game of the season. Houston will get the football first.

12:40 p.m. | Gene Frenette: Jaguars, long known as an AFC South afterthought, should be division favorite

For whatever segment of Jaguars fans are still unconvinced about this team’s readiness to be a playoff contender, or question whether its hopes of winning the AFC South are realistic, just abandon those thoughts.

Now it’s understandable why some might be pessimistic on both counts, given the 44-120 record of the previous decade. The Jaguars have earned a reputation for being among the NFL’s most notorious underachievers. Time and time again, they have killed or severely diminished preseason optimism by Halloween.

Well, those were the Jaguars of yesteryear, but not this team. | Read more --Gene Frenette

Since the start of the franchise in 1995, the Jaguars have hired 14 different offensive coordinators. Over 27 years, the team's offense hadn't evolved much, certainly not to the level that offenses across the league have.
