Postgame review: Jacksonville Jaguars rally from 27 down to stun Los Angeles Chargers

The playoffs are here. For the first time in five years, the Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off an NFL postseason football game, facing the Los Angeles Chargers in Saturday's night's AFC wild-card game at TIAA Bank Field.

The game shapes up as a matchup of young quarterbacks on the rapid rise. In his second year, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has surpassed 4,000 yards, completing 387 of 584 passes while doubling his touchdowns (from 12 to 25) and halving his interceptions (from 17 to 8). On the opposite side is the Chargers' third-year man Justin Herbert, who completed 68.2 percent of his passing attempts this year while gaining 4,739 yards through the air.

It's not the first Jaguars-Chargers meeting this season. The Jaguars rolled past an injury-weakened Chargers team 38-10 on Sept. 25 in Week 3, thanks to two takeaways, an impenetrable rush defense that limited Los Angeles to 26 ground yards and three Lawrence touchdown passes to Christian Kirk, Marvin Jones and Zay Jones.

The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the divisional playoff in one week. The Kansas City Chiefs are the most likely opponent, but in the event of upsets elsewhere, the winner could end up meeting the Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals or Baltimore Ravens.

11:40 p.m. | Jaguars post largest comeback in franchise history, defeat Chargers 31-30 in wild-card round

With four seconds remaining in the contest, Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson lined up to kick a 36-yard field goal to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers, 31-30 as the clock expired. He nailed it. The Jaguars are onto the divisional round of the playoffs. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey

11:29 p.m. | FIELD GOAL: JAGUARS WIN

Riley Patterson comes on. From 36 yards. It's good. The Jaguars WIN. The third-largest comeback in NFL playoff history. A team that trailed 27-0 in the first half and turned over five times, four of them Trevor Lawrence interceptions, is on the way to the divisional playoffs.

FINAL: Jaguars 31, Chargers 30

11:25 p.m. | Travis Etienne converts fourth down

Wow. On fourth and 1, Jaguars send Travis Etienne around end and he runs down to the 15 of Los Angeles. The Jaguars can drain the clock and summon Riley Patterson if they choose...

11:22 p.m. | TWO MINUTE WARNING, Jaguars cross midfield

The Jaguars are on the move. They need only a field goal. They're almost in range.

Two passes to Christian Kirk, a Trevor Lawrence scramble in between and a pass to Zay Jones. The Jags are already across midfield and need only a field goal to complete a stunning rally from 27 points down.

11:18 p.m. | Jaguars defense forces three-and-out, Jags to get football back with a chance to win

Wow. The Jaguars could win this.

It's Sacksonville time. Roy Robertson-Harris sacked Justin Herbert for a loss of 7 on first down. A screen to Austin Ekeler quickly got bottled up and the Jags downed a pass for little gain on third down. The Jaguars will take over at their own 21, with 3:09 to go in the fourth quarter, trailing 30-28. They need only a field goal. They were down 27-0 in the first half.

11:14 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence throws fourth TD and Jags cut L.A. lead to two

Stunning: The Jaguars are almost all the way back.

Trevor Lawrence completed a pass to a diving Zay Jones for a first down, a play that the Chargers unsuccessfully challenged. Then another completion to Christian Kirk in the hurry-up offense across midfield, and subsequent first-down passes to Kirk and to Evan Engram advanced the Jaguars to the Los Angeles 10. Lawrence then delivered an ace pass to the right side of the end zone, and Kirk reeled in a perfect catch.

The Chargers, irate that Jawaan Taylor wasn't whistled for a false start, also picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when Joey Bosa spiked his helmet. The Jags elected to take half the distance and go for two, and Lawrence scored on the sneak.

Chargers 30, Jaguars 28, 5:25 4th.

10:59 p.m. | Chargers miss on field goal try

Just when the Jaguars appeared to have the Chargers stopped... Travon Walker was whistled for a dead-ball foul on Justin Herbert, after Foley Fatukasi had already brought the quarterback down. Herbert then took off and ran for 15 yards on third and a mile, and the quarterback converted another third down on a pass to Keenan Allen inside the 30.

The Chargers didn't progress further. Cameron Dicker arrived for his fourth field goal of the night, but this time he missed from 40 yards out. With 8:47 to go, the Jaguars are very much still alive.

10:42 p.m. | END OF THIRD QUARTER: Chargers 30, Jaguars 20

Fifteen minutes left. Trevor Lawrence has turned things around. Can the Jags, once down 27-0, complete a stunning comeback in the playoffs?

10:38 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence fires long score to Zay Jones

Wow. The Jaguars are still alive.

Trevor Lawrence, seemingly unscarred by the four first-half picks, directed a superb drive that included a pass to Marvin Jones for a first down near midfield. Then Lawrence went deep to Zay Jones, who exploited a bust in zone coverage for a bomb to the end zone of 39 yards. The Jaguars went for two but Lawrence couldn't connect with Zay Jones in the end zone, another play with a lot of contact on the pass. So it's still a two-score game.

Chargers 30, Jaguars 20, 0:44 3rd.

10:34 p.m. | Field goal Chargers: Cameron Dicker kicks 50-yarder after disputed catch

The Chargers got a break on that one: Gerald Everett didn't fully maintain control of a diving catch attempt down the right sideline, but Justin Herbert rushed to the line and got a snap away before Doug Pederson could throw the challenge flag. Another catch by Everett set Los Angeles in field goal range, and Cameron Dicker booted a long field goal from 50 yards. The Chargers' drive had stalled out under pressure from the Jacksonville pass rush, notably K'Lavon Chaisson off the edge.

Chargers 30, Jaguars 14, 2:58 3rd.

10:26 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Marvin Jones TD gives Jags glimmer of second-half hope

That's a far better possession from the Jaguars' offense. Is there still a chance?

Trevor Lawrence turned up the tempo and mixed an assortment of short passes to Evan Engram and Travis Etienne, keeping the Chargers off balance. A key play came inside the 20, when Joey Bosa was flagged for lining up in the neutral zone to nullify a sack that had cost Lawrence 15 yards. Then, Lawrence looked left for a wide-open Marvin Jones Jr. for a 6-yard touchdown, completing a march of 89 yards.

Chargers 27, Jaguars 14, 8:11 3rd.

10:10 p.m. | Jaguars' pass rush halts Chargers' possession

Los Angeles quickly marched down the field, sparked by a third-down conversion from Justin Herbert to Gerald Everett. But the Jaguars sent heavy pressure on second and third down after the Chargers crossed midfield, hurrying Herbert into an overthrown screen on third down. Jamal Agnew made a fair catch of the ensuing punt at the Jacksonville 10, and it's time for Trevor Lawrence and the offense to go to work.

10:03 p.m. | Second half ready for kickoff, Los Angeles to receive

The third quarter is ready to begin. The Chargers will receive the second-half kickoff, up 20 points on the Jags.

9:50 p.m. | HALFTIME: Chargers 27, Jaguars 7

A historically rough first half for the Jaguars with five turnovers, and for Trevor Lawrence with four picks. It's a 20-point hole for the Jags at the half.

9:48 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence to Evan Engram pass gets Jags on board

The Jaguars are trying to build Trevor Lawrence's confidence with very short and safe passing routes, leading to several completions and his best throw of the day to date, a fourth-down strike over the middle to Marvin Jones Jr. Then came a rocket pass from Lawrence, over the middle to Evan Engram in traffic. The tight end jumped up and held on despite a hit to the head from Derwin James. Still time for a comeback?

Chargers 27, Jaguars 7, 0:24 2nd.

9:39 p.m. | Fumbled jet sweep spoils Chargers' drive

Los Angeles tried a jet sweep but Michael Bandy couldn't get the handoff from quarterback Justin Herbert, and the ball flew 10 yards into the backfield. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, Bandy beat Roy Robertson-Harris to the loose ball to keep the Jags from recovering, but the miscue halted the Chargers' offensive march and led to a punt.

9:36 p.m. | Three-and-out for Jaguars after drop

The passing game is way, way out of sync in this one. Trevor Lawrence throws a low pass toward Christian Kirk but the ball is behind him and Kirk drops the ball. The Jaguars punt, again. Lawrence is 5 of 18 today with 35 yards and four picks, three to Asante Samuel Jr.

9:31 p.m. | Field goal: Chargers can't find end zone but extend lead

Turnover number five, for a change, didn't lead to points. Justin Herbert overthrew Keenan Allen on third down, leading to a Cameron Dicker field goal from 23 yards.

Chargers 27, Jaguars 0, 4:25 2nd.

9:28 p.m. | Jaguars muff punt, Chargers recover at Jags 7

That is miscue number five.

The Jaguars forced a punt but the punt hits Chris Claybrooks in the helmet, making it a live ball. Chargers recover at the Jaguars' 7. It's getting worse for Jacksonville fans.

9:21 p.m. | INTERCEPTION: Asante Samuel Jr. picks off his third pass, fourth INT for Trevor Lawrence

This is becoming flat-out bizarre. Presented with prime field position after Jamal Agnew returned the kickoff to midfield, the Jaguars couldn't take advantage, and instead... another pick. Trevor Lawrence jammed a pass into traffic and Asante Samuel Jr. picked it off. That's the third pick for Samuel, making him the first player with three picks in a playoff game since January 2004, when both Ty Law of the Patriots and Ricky Manning Jr. of the Panthers achieved the feat.

9:15 p.m. | Touchdown Chargers: L.A. pulls away on Justin Herbert strike to Gerald Everett

Justin Herbert remains on fire for the Chargers. Facing third and long, he fired a strike over the middle to Keenan Allen for the conversion from midfield. The Jaguars thought they were on the verge of a key stop following a Josh Allen sack.

Andre Cisco then saved a touchdown with a flying breakup of a play-action pass to the end zone, but it didn't last: Herbert fired a third-down strike to Gerald Everett and the tight end lunged across the goal line. With a 24-point gap, this one is feeling grim for the Jaguars.

Chargers 24, Jaguars 0, 7:12 2nd.

9:05 p.m. | Jaguars' offense stifled again

No success at all for the Jacksonville offense in five possessions. Kenneth Murray Jr. sacked Trevor Lawrence on third down, and Logan Cooke again booted a punt under pressure that was below his usual distance. Strong field position once more for Justin Herbert and Los Angeles.

9:01 p.m. | END OF FIRST QUARTER: Chargers 17, Jaguars 0

Fifteen minutes, and three Trevor Lawrence interceptions, in the books in Jacksonville. Can the Jaguars come back from this deficit?

8:56 p.m. | Touchdown Chargers: Austin Ekeler takes it into the end zone, Jaguars in deep hole

The touchdown man, Austin Ekeler, powers around the left side into the end zone from 6 yards as the Chargers turn a third turnover into points. It's a 17-point deficit for the Jaguars and the TIAA Bank Field crowd is stunned.

Chargers 17, Jaguars 0, 0:44 1st.

8:54 p.m. | INTERCEPTION: Asante Samuel Jr. picks off Trevor Lawrence yet again

Three picks in the first quarter thrown by Trevor Lawrence in his playoff debut. Two plays after a deep pass led to defensive pass interference on Asante Samuel Jr. — a flag subsequently picked up by the officials — the cornerback jumped a short pass to Evan Engram and picked off the football inside the Jaguars' 20. A nightmare opening quarter for Lawrence and a big chance for the Chargers to pull away.

8:48 p.m. | Roy Robertson-Harris bats pass for three-and-out

The Jaguars needed that. Roy Robertson-Harris swatted down Justin Herbert's pass on third down, forcing the Chargers to punt the ball away from near midfield. A struggling Jags offense takes over on its own 13.

8:43 p.m. | Jaguars' offensive woes continue with three-and-out

No interception this time, but the offense continues to struggle. The Jaguars went three-and-out, and Khalil Mack is getting steady pressure on Trevor Lawrence. That's forcing rushed throws and off-target throws. The Jags gained only one yard on that drive, and Logan Cooke barely got off a punt to midfield under a significant punt rush. The Chargers will open in excellent field position.

8:37 p.m. | Field goal Chargers: Cameron Dicker makes kick after second Jags turnover

Trevor Lawrence has been shaky to start. Justin Herbert? Pretty much the opposite. The Chargers' quarterback led a march down the field straight after that turnover, including conversions to Gerald Everett, DeAndre Carter and then Keenan Allen on third down.

But the Jaguars denied the Chargers inside the 5. Arden Key got his helmet on a second-down pass and then Devin Lloyd broke up the third-down try. So Cameron Dicker entered for the 22-yard chip-shot field goal. It's a two-score hole early for the Jags.

Chargers 10, Jaguars 0, 5:30 1st.

8:28 p.m. | Interception: Asante Samuel Jr. picks off Trevor Lawrence again

It doesn't look like that early pick dented Trevor Lawrence's confidence. But a second one might: Two drives, two interceptions.

The QB immediately went back to the air with a couple of first-down completions to Evan Engram to advance across midfield. Travis Etienne then took off around the left side for another first down. But a third-down pass to Zay Jones came up short of the chains, and on fourth and 7, Lawrence had his fourth-down pass for Jones picked off by former FSU defensive back Asante Samuel Jr., who was applying tight (maybe excessively tight?) coverage. The Chargers' defense has the upper hand early on against the Jaguars' QB, who has already absorbed some heavy contact from Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack.

8:18 p.m. | Touchdown Chargers: Austin Ekeler breaks away for rushing touchdown in opening 87 seconds

The Chargers didn't waste any time in punishing that miscue. Austin Ekeler took a handoff to the right and followed his blockers through an Interstate 95-width hole, fending off a tackle and diving into the end zone for a 12-yard score. It's the latest first-quarter deficit for the Jaguars, and this one is in the playoffs.

Chargers 7, Jaguars 0, 13:33 1st.

8:17 p.m. | Interception: Chargers' Drue Tranquill picks off batted Trevor Lawrence pass

That's a nightmare start for the Jaguars' offense. On the second play from scrimmage, Trevor Lawrence has his pass tipped in the line by Sebastian Joseph-Day and picked off by the Chargers' Drue Tranquill. It'll be Los Angeles football inside the Jacksonville 20.

8:14 p.m. | Kickoff time: Chargers win toss and defer
