Game recap: Jacksonville Jaguars fade, lose to Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium, London

London week arrived for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who traveled across the Atlantic Ocean for a Sunday morning clash against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium. Kickoff was at 9:30 a.m. Eastern, and the game was streamed exclusively through ESPN+.

Both teams entered in the midst of slumps, losing four consecutive games. The Broncos have the worst statistical offense in the NFL, averaging barely 14 points per game. The Jaguars have remained close week after week, but continue to fall short in the fourth quarter. All five losses have come by a single score.

Travis Etienne is now confirmed as the Jaguars' featured rusher, five days after the Jags traded third-year tailback James Robinson to the New York Jets. That means an all-Clemson backfield alongside Trevor Lawrence. For the Broncos, quarterback Russell Wilson missed last week's game against the Jets because of a hamstring injury, and has struggled to move the offense even when healthy.

The Jaguars went up against embattled Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett, who ran the offense under Doug Marrone when the Jags advanced to the AFC Championship Game in the 2017 season.

12:29 p.m. | FINAL: Broncos 21, Jaguars 17

Russell Wilson sneaks for the first down. The game is over. The Jaguars have lost five in a row.

12:23 p.m. | Interception: Broncos' K'Waun Williams picks off Trevor Lawrence

That should do it.

On his first pass of the possession, Trevor Lawrence looked to his right, but K'Waun Williams dashed in front of Evan Engram to pick the ball off. The Broncos will need one first down to drain the clock entirely, but this one appears just about over.

12:20 p.m. | Touchdown Broncos: Latavius Murray runs for go-ahead score

Another long drive for Denver, and once again, the Jaguars are on the verge of defeat.

Latavius Murray finished off the march, plowing over several Jaguars to the end zone from 2 yards out. Denver leads by four. Time is running out.

Broncos 21, Jaguars 17, 1:43 4th.

12:14 p.m. | TWO-MINUTE WARNING

The Broncos are knocking on the door, after a 49-yard pass from Russell Wilson to K.J. Hamler and then Wilson's third-down scramble inside the 20.

Denver is already in position for a field goal to force overtime. Can they find the end zone for a knockout touchdown in regulation, one that would send the Jags to a fifth straight loss?

12:09 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne carries into London lead

The Jaguars are into the end zone, and back in the lead.

That punt return started the Jags in prime territory, and Travis Etienne ended up carrying the football into the end zone from a yard out. He's up to 156 yards on the day. In between, big runs by Etienne and receiver Zay Jones set up the score.

Jaguars 17, Broncos 14, 3:54 4th.

12:02 p.m. | Broncos miss on long pass

Another three-and-out. Denver was backed up deep from the Logan Cooke punt, and they went nowhere. Russell Wilson went deep on third down but two receivers appeared to get in each other's way on an incompletion.

Christian Kirk returns the punt across midfield. Is this the Jaguars' last chance to take the lead?

11:58 a.m. | Jaguars' drive ends in sack

One holding penalty wipes out a long Travis Etienne throw. Another, ultimately declined, occurred on a drive-ending third down. That flag got declined because Trevor Lawrence was sacked, stopping the possession at midfield. The Jacksonville offense continues to struggle, in spite of a Lawrence completion to Zay Jones on that drive.

Time left: 8:18, and the Jaguars' chances are running out.

11:49 a.m. | Key locks down Broncos' drive

Arden Key, who has had some nice plays in this one, swats down a Russell Wilson pass on third down and Denver goes three-and-out again.

11:46 a.m. | Jaguars' drive stopped after big loss

Trevor Lawrence's pass to Travis Etienne lost a chunk of yards and a QB scramble on third down wasn't effective. That means another punt to start the fourth.

11:42 a.m. | End of third quarter: Broncos 14, Jaguars 10

The Jaguars' early lead is no more. Can Trevor Lawrence lead the comeback? The Jags have only 78 net passing yards through three quarters in London.

11:39 a.m. | Jaguars sack halts Denver drive

It's Dawuane Smoot again, combining with Travon Walker to sack Russell Wilson on third down — although officials did not flag an apparent facemask by the Jags' defenders on Wilson. The Broncos are punting late in the third quarter.

11:34 a.m. | Lawrence misses Marvin Jones on third down

Another drive bogs down, after Trevor Lawrence threw wide of Marvin Jones on third down. The receiver had gotten some separation but the Jaguars' QB couldn't connect.

Travis Etienne is up to 122 yards on the ground, but the Jags are behind for now. Lawrence is 15 for 24 and the team has 84 net passing yards.

11:25 a.m. | Touchdown Broncos: Denver takes lead after 98-yard march

After a dismal start, Russell Wilson is starting to grasp the upper hand against the Jaguars' defense, and Jacksonville is now playing from behind in London.

Wilson marched the Broncos from their own 2, with the key play a 38-yard strike to Greg Dulcick inside the 5. From there, veteran running back Melvin Gordon plowed into the end zone from a yard out.

Broncos 14, Jaguars 10, 5:07 3rd.

11:17 a.m. | Sack spoils Jacksonville's possession

Another shaky moment for Trevor Lawrence. This time, the QB got strip-sacked, and the Jaguars were fortunate that Tyler Shatley fell on the ball. Still, the play lost 14 yards and spoiled a possession that included nice runs by Travis Etienne and JaMycal Hasty, plus an excellent Evan Engram catch.

Logan Cooke's punt was just about perfect, downed by Daniel Thomas at the Denver 2. A long road lies ahead for Russell Wilson and the Broncos.

11:10 a.m. | Second half kicks off at Wembley

Chris Claybrooks returns the kick and the Jaguars' offense is back on the field.

10:57 a.m. | Halftime: Jaguars 10, Broncos 7

Russell Wilson marched the Broncos across midfield, with a chance to take the lead. Then Dawuane Smoot and Arden Key knocked Denver right back, sacking Wilson on second down with nine seconds left. Wilson then threw incomplete on third and fourth down.

10:47 a.m. | Intentional grounding derails Jaguars drive

Travis Etienne is already close to 100 rushing yards on the game, but the Jaguars again are sputtering in the passing attack. The Jags advanced across midfield, but on third-and-long, Trevor Lawrence retreated deeper and deeper into his backfield before throwing the ball away. That drew an intentional grounding flag, extinguishing any chance for a long field goal.

10:35 a.m. | Touchdown Broncos: Jerry Jeudy finishes off long drive

The Broncos' offense has come to life, and this one is a contest in London.

After three hapless drives, Russell Wilson found more of a rhythm that time, converting a fourth-and-1 and connecting with Jerry Jeudy inside the Jaguars' 10. From there, Jeudy took a handoff into the end zone from 6 yards.

Jaguars 10, Broncos 7, 2:44 2nd.

10:22 a.m. | Field goal: Riley Patterson extends Jags' edge

It didn't end in a touchdown, but that's more points for the Jaguars. Travis Etienne set it up, running for a gain of 49 yards.

The Jaguars didn't pick up another first down, despite an Evan Engram reception, but Riley Patterson booted a 37-yard field goal to boost the score to 10 points. The way Denver's offense looks at this point, that might be all the scoring the Jags need in London. Two of the Broncos' last three opponents have held them to single digits.

Jaguars 10, Broncos 0, 8:43 2nd.

10:16 a.m. | Broncos go three-and-out again

Denver still doesn't have a first down. The Broncos failed to convert third-and-inches and the punt unit comes out (not before penalty number eight, delay of game). The Jaguars' defense is off to an excellent start.

10:12 a.m. | Interception: Justin Simmons picks off Trevor Lawrence in end zone

The drive started horribly for Justin Simmons (15-yard penalties for a low block and taunting), but the Broncos' Pro Bowl safety got the upper hand in the end, courtesy of a disastrous throw from Trevor Lawrence.

The Jaguars exploited penalties — seven already by Denver — and a nice Travis Etienne run to break inside the red zone. The Jags had first-and-goal on the 1 when Lawrence rolled right and tried to drill the ball into traffic, where Simmons picked it off to end the possession. A particularly costly mistake at a time when the Jags could have gone ahead 14-0.

10:04 a.m. | End of first quarter: Jaguars 7, Broncos 0

One quarter in the books, and the Jaguars are in control early in

9:53 a.m. | Jaguars D continues to frustrate Denver

The Broncos' offense continues going nowhere. DaVon Hamilton had a particularly nice possession on defense, and the Jags are back to work on offense.

9:46 a.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Evan Engram catches Trevor Lawrence TD pass after turnover

A little bit of Travis Etienne and a little bit of JaMycal Hasty on that short-field possession, and it ended with an Evan Engram touchdown as the Jags make that Tyson Campbell pick pay off.

Etienne dashed for 16 yards and a first down, and on third-and-long, Trevor Lawrence connected deep with Engram for a 22-yard score in the end zone. No off-target throw on that one, and it's an early lead for the Jags in London.

Jaguars 7, Broncos 0, 7:40 1st.

9:41 a.m. | Interception: Tyson Campbell picks off Russell Wilson

It's interception time. Tyson Campbell, with good positioning, punishes an underthrow by Wilson and leaps for a superb catch. The Jaguars take over inside the Denver 40, and that's a big opportunity for the offense now.

9:38 a.m. | Jaguars' drive ends early, too

Almost, but not quite. Trevor Lawrence looked deep for Evan Engram on third down, but the pass was a bit behind the tight end and he couldn't bring in the spectacular one-handed catch. So it's another punt, this time from the Jags.

9:34 a.m. | Solid start for Jaguars D with Arden Key sack

Is London the new Sacksonville? The Jaguars are off to a superb start on defense.

Darious Williams nearly picked off Russell Wilson on first down, and then Arden Key steamrolled Wilson for a third-down sack. That's a three-and-out, and after a punt, it's time for Trevor Lawrence and the offense to go to work.

9 a.m. | Jaguars must turn things around in London or season goals will evaporate

During his first three NFL seasons, these are the dates on the calendar — Dec. 5, 2021; Nov. 22, 2020; Dec. 8, 2019 — that serve as a sobering reminder to outside linebacker Josh Allen of history he doesn’t want the Jaguars repeating.

Those are the days his team was officially eliminated from the NFL playoffs in his career, though reality is the Jaguars were trending toward dead-end seasons long before then.

Allen loathes the thought of it happening again, which is why Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium in London represents more than a must-win game. | Read more --Gene Frenette

Trevor Lawrence is getting better with the game on the line and precious few minutes and seconds remaining.

It still hasn’t translated into a victory since back-to-back blowouts over Indianapolis and the Los Angeles Chargers in weeks two and three, and that’s the only measure a quarterback cares about. | Read more --Garry Smits
