Game recap: Indianapolis Colts beat Jacksonville Jaguars on late Alec Pierce touchdown

The Jacksonville Jaguars hit the road for an AFC South matchup in Week 6, traveling to Lucas Oil Stadium to meet the Indianapolis Colts in their second meeting of the 2022 NFL season.

At 2-3, the Jaguars are suddenly showing signs of struggle after their strong start, including their 24-0 shutout of the Colts in Week 2. Second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence lost five turnovers two weeks ago against the Philadelphia Eagles and failed to move the offense into the end zone in last week's loss to the Houston Texans.

For the Colts, veteran quarterback Matt Ryan has incurred heavy pressure throughout the year, but did lead Indianapolis to a 12-9 victory over the struggling Broncos the last time out.

Sunday's game was a relative rarity, matching two head coaches who both played quarterback in the NFL (the Jaguars' Doug Pederson and the Colts' Frank Reich). Both have long connections going back to the Eagles in the 2010s.

The Jaguars have struggled for years when on the road in Indianapolis, losing nine of their last 10 road trips to the Colts.

4:37 p.m. | Trevor Tracker: How does Trevor Lawrence's 2022 Jaguars season compare to 2021?

Trevor Lawrence bounced back from two bad performances with a good one, but he was hurried all day and sacked four times in a 34-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. | Read more --Tim Walters

For the second week in a row, the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4) needed a miracle for their final play of the game in order to get a victory. For the second week in a row, it didn't happen. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey

4:09 p.m. | FINAL: Colts 34, Jaguars 27

The Jaguars tried a bunch of laterals on the final play, but Indianapolis finally snuffed out the football parade. After a 389-yard game from Matt Ryan, the Jaguars drop to 2-4.

4:03 p.m. | Touchdown Colts: Alec Pierce from Matt Ryan on 32-yard strike

The Colts looked set to play for the long Chase McLaughlin field goal. Instead... another kind of highlight.

Indianapolis went deep on third and 13 from the Jaguars' 32, and the result was a stunner: Matt Ryan to Alec Pierce on a bomb down the sideline. The receiver got behind Shaq Griffin in the latest rough moment for the Jaguars' cornerback.

Phillip Lindsay powered into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Colts 34, Jaguars 27, 0:17 4th.

3:58 p.m. | Colts convert to Michael Pittman Jr., now in field goal range

Big play there: Facing third and 10, Matt Ryan finds Michael Pittman over the middle for a first down, now near the Jaguars' 30. Indianapolis is very much within Chase McLaughlin's field goal range, with 39 seconds to go.

3:52 p.m. | Two-minute warning: Matt Ryan, Colts on the march late

The Colts are driving. But will they have a fourth-and-1 at their own 43, or a first-and-10? Rayshawn Jenkins delivered a crunching tackle to Michael Pittman Jr. right at the chains in a pass over the middle.

3:47 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence to Christian Kirk after marathon drive

Jaguars fans have been waiting for a come-from-behind drive by Trevor Lawrence. This one was a marathon: 18 plays, 84 yards, 10:03.

The Jaguars got a break when Stephon Gilmore was flagged for pass interference on Zay Jones, extending a Jacksonville drive on third down. Then Lawrence converted a third and 15 with a strike to a leaping Jones once again. Another third downs resulted in a successful bootleg by Lawrence, then on fourth down, a QB sneak moved inside the Indy 40.

Defensive holding by DeForest Buckner on a run play gave the Jaguars a first down, and Lawrence took off and scrambled inside the 20. Runs by Travis Etienne and James Robinson moved inside the 10. Then Lawrence rolled right and fired a strike to Christian Kirk for the lead. A two-point try failed, but the Jaguars are back on top.

Jaguars 27, Colts 26, 2:44 4th.

3:30 p.m. | Touchdown Colts: Indy in front on Matt Ryan TD pass to Jelani Woods

The Jaguars aren't happy after that drive.

Indy got a first down on defensive pass interference when Shaq Griffin was flagged for holding Alec Pierce. Then, they got a touchdown when Jelani Woods leaped to catch a Matt Ryan TD pass in the end zone. Jaguars players felt that Woods had pushed off, but no offensive pass interference flag on that one.

Meanwhile, Ryan is up to 320 passing yards, and the Jaguars are trailing for the first time today. Can Trevor Lawrence lead the comeback?

Colts 26, Jaguars 21, 12:47 4th.

3:23 p.m. | End of third quarter: Jaguars 21, Colts 19

One quarter to go. The Jaguars are in front, but the momentum feels like it's with Indianapolis right now, and Matt Ryan has the Colts across midfield again after a throw to Parris Campbell. The QB is up to 292 yards passing.

3:18 p.m. | After option play goes bad, Jaguars turn over on downs

Trevor Lawrence is finding more of a rhythm in the second half, and moving the ball with 12 consecutive completions at one point. Two passes to Zay Jones advanced the Jaguars deep into Indianapolis territory.

But the Jaguars called for the option on fourth-and-1, and D.J. Speed downed Travis Etienne in the backfield for a loss. The ball goes over to Indy on downs.

3:07 p.m. | Touchdown Colts: Deon Jackson finds end zone, Indy two-pointer no good

Jaguars fans have seen that before: One week after prolonging a Texans drive with a roughing-the-passer flag, Travon Walker keeps a Colts drive moving after getting flagged for roughing Matt Ryan on third-and-long near midfield. The rookie got his hands up into the quarterback's facemask.

Ryan made the Jaguars pay. Two passes to Michael Pittman Jr., who is having a big game, moved inside the red zone. Deon Jackson rumbled through tackles down to the 2, and then plowed into the end zone himself.

Frank Reich called for the two-point conversion, and Ryan floated a pass to a diving Pittman for the two and the tie. But officials reviewed the conversion and called the pass incomplete.

Jaguars 21, Colts 19, 5:44 3rd.

2:56 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence run finishes off excellent drive

A highlight-reel touchdown to open the half? Not quite. Travis Etienne rolled over a defender and dashed to the end zone, but officials ruled the running back down by contact when his elbow grazed the ground. So the run turned out to be only a gain of 27.

But the ground game kept working for the Jaguars, at least when they use it. The Colts bailed out Jacksonville with a defensive hold on third down. Mixing in a tight end screen to Luke Farrell advanced the Jags inside the Indianapolis 20. Then, Tim Jones caught his first career regular-season pass to move to the 1.

From there, Trevor Lawrence zoomed into the end zone again from 1 yard out. That's a touchdown.

Jaguars 21, Colts 13, 10:55 3rd.

2:47 p.m. | Jaguars-Colts third quarter kicks off

It's Jaguars football to begin the third quarter. Will the Jaguars' running backs see more action in this period?

2:33 p.m. | HALFTIME: Jaguars 14, Colts 13

A strange first half for the Jags. Travis Etienne, James Robinson and JaMycal Hasty are on fire in the ground game, but Colts QB Matt Ryan is already 26 of 37 for 232 passing yards, and the Jaguars have only 15 net yards through the air.

2:31 p.m. | Field goal Colts: Chase McLaughlin cuts Jacksonville lead to 1

Matt Ryan is passing and passing and passing. There's not much suspense right now, but the Colts' veteran QB is keeping the Jaguars off balance.

Directing a crisp two-minute drill, Ryan connected on third-and-long with Kylen Granson to advance the football into field goal range. But Tyson Campbell and Rayshawn Jenkins combined to break up a Ryan pass on third down, and Chase McLaughlin arrived to convert a 42-yard field goal.

Jaguars 14, Colts 13, 0:21 2nd.

2:24 p.m. | Trevor Lawrence sacked again, Jaguars go three-and-out

The running game has dropped out of this one for Jacksonville. The Jaguars are passing play after play, and it isn't working right now. Trevor Lawrence was sacked for the fourth time and that means a punt, giving the ball back to Indianapolis with a minute and a half before the break.

The game is paused for an injury stoppage to Colts returned Keke Coutee, who went down hard in a full-speed collision with Jaguars long snapper Ross Matiscik.

2:16 p.m. | Touchdown Colts: Parris Campbell finds end zone for Indy

Short passes keep moving the Colts along.

Deon Jackson took a pair of short tosses from Matt Ryan for sizable yardage, including a 22-yard reception, advancing into the red zone. Indianapolis survived a fumble when center Ryan Kelly fell on a football that had been stripped by Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell, then a defensive pass interference flag extended the possession again.

From there, the Colts ended their TD drought at 110 minutes, when Ryan passed to Parris Campbell for a 5-yard score.

Jaguars 14, Colts 10, 2:06 2nd.

2:04 p.m. | Jaguars go three-and-out after sack

That drive didn't go anywhere for the Jaguars. Facing third-and-1, the Jaguars chose to pass, and Trevor Lawrence was sacked when Colts lineman Tyquan Lewis overpowered reserve guard Cole Van Lanen.

Indianapolis will start from near midfield after the Jacksonville punt.

1:59 p.m. | Intentional grounding flag ends Indy drive

Matt Ryan continues to move the football in the short passing game — to a point.

A pass to Michael Pittman Jr. moved the ball across midfield, but the Jaguars' defense stood firm again. Pressure from Rayshawn Jenkins and Dawuane Smoot hurried Ryan into a throwaway on third down, and referee Jerome Boger ruled the play was intentional grounding because Ryan's throw didn't get back to the line of scrimmage. Indianapolis chose to punt and Jamal Agnew made a fair catch at the 11.

1:50 p.m. | Touchdown: JaMycal Hasty takes handoff 61 yards to house

After four straight passes to open the drive, the Jaguars hand the ball to their third running back — and it pays off.

It was third-and-1 from the Jacksonville 39, and JaMycal Hasty took the handoff to the right side and just kept on running. Indianapolis had nobody at the second level and that's a 61-yard touchdown in what was only the second Jacksonville carry for Hasty.

Jaguars 14, Colts 3, 11:27 2nd.

1:42 p.m. | Chase McLaughlin field goal puts Colts on board

He's been around the league a long time, but Matt Ryan is still dangerous when he gets into a rhythm — and that's what happened on that drive.

The Colts' quarterback completed first-down passes one after another, to Jelani Woods, Michael Pittman Jr. and then Alec Pierce. But Indy broke down in the red zone, with Ryan unable to connect with targets in the end zone. The Jaguars' pass defense stiffened when it mattered most. That led to a 28-yard field goal from former Jags kicker Chase McLaughlin.

Jaguars 7, Colts 3, 13:56 2nd.

1:36 p.m. | End of 1st quarter: Jaguars 7, Colts 0

That's the end of the first. Jags' ground game is looking good early.

1:27 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence sneaks over the goal line

This is going to be a running kind of day for the Jaguars.

A James Robinson run for 16. A Travis Etienne screen pass for 23 yards more. Then an elaborate and effective end-around play to Jamal Agnew, diving for the pylon, where officials ruled him down short of the goal line.

Doug Pederson elected not to challenge, but it didn't matter in the end. Etienne was stuffed for a loss from a wildcat set on first down, Robinson found a hole but got stopped inside the 1 on second down, but Lawrence sneaked right down the middle on third down for the 1-yard score.

Jaguars 7, Colts 0, 3:48 1st.

1:19 p.m. | Colts go three-and-out

Indy QB Matt Ryan is completing passes but gaining hardly any yards. The Colts were stopped a yard short of the sticks but punted again. Jamal Agnew turned in a nice punt return to just short of midfield.

1:14 p.m. | DeForest Buckner sack pushes Jaguars outside field goal range

Oops. It started so well for the Jags, with Travis Etienne rushing for a career-long gain of 48 yards and racing into field goal range at the Indy 26. But Trevor Lawrence misfired on second down and then made a big mistake on third, retreating deeper and deeper into the backfield until DeForest Buckner sacked him for a loss of 15. That bumped the Jags out of field goal range and led to a punt.

1:07 p.m. | Colts drive bogs down at midfield

A holding penalty and a drop haunted that opening drive from the Colts, although Matt Ryan looked sharper than in Week 2 in Jacksonville. Indy didn't run at all on the opening drive, calling seven short passes. Frank Reich passed up the chance to go for fourth-and-3 and elected to punt. The Jaguars will start from their own 15 after a Jamal Agnew fair catch.

1:02 p.m. | Jaguars-Colts kickoff: Jags win toss and defer

It's kickoff time in Indy. Matt Ryan and the Colts get the football first.
