Postgame recap: Opportunities slip away in Jaguars loss to Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

The Jacksonville Jaguars enter Week 10 of the 2022 season, making the trip westward to take on the AFC West-leading Kansas City Chiefs.

The game is a matchup of an established superstar quarterback and Super Bowl champion in Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes, and a highly-rated prospect who's hoping to someday reach the top at the position in the Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence. The second-year QB delivered one of his most efficient performances so far last week as the Jags defeated the Las Vegas Raiders to halt their losing streak.

Also, keep an eye on the coaching matchup. Jaguars coach Doug Pederson spent five seasons under current Chiefs coach Andy Reid, both with the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles, and Reid hired Pederson to his Eagles staff 13 years ago.

Because of the turmoil that has engulfed the Indianapolis Colts, an upset win Sunday could boost the Jaguars into second place in the AFC South.

Missed opportunities: Jaguars can't slow down Mahomes, fall 27-17 to Kansas City Chiefs. Here are our takeaways.

4:00 p.m. | FINAL: Chiefs 27, Jaguars 17

The Jaguars drop to 3-7 despite forcing three turnovers and recovering an onside kick in Kansas City.

3:55 p.m. | Two-minute warning: Chiefs running out clock

This game is almost over. Foley Fatukasi stopped the Chiefs' dive up the middle on third down. But Andy Reid went for fourth down, and Patrick Mahomes converted a short pass to Travis Kelce. Barring a bizarre turnover, they'll be able to drain the clock.

Earlier in the possession, Marquez Valdes-Scantling made a spectacular catch on the sideline and stayed in bounds to advance Kansas City near midfield. Doug Pederson burned a challenge but the catch held up on replay.

3:40 p.m. | Touchdown: Jaguars turn pick into points

Trevor Lawrence is making some fine passes today. This time, taking over with a short field after the Andre Cisco interception, he marched the Jags down the field and finally lofted the ball into the end zone for Christian Kirk. That's a 19-yard touchdown pass.

It's a two-score game now, but do the Jaguars have enough time?

Chiefs 27, Jaguars 17, 5:26 4th.

3:31 p.m. | Interception! Andre Cisco picks off Mahomes

The Jaguars can't say they haven't produced turnovers. Andre Cisco picks off Patrick Mahomes for the third pick of the day.

3:24 p.m. | Long incompletion ends another Jaguars drive

The frustration factor is growing for the Jaguars. Trevor Lawrence looked deep for Zay Jones down the right sideline on third down, but the receiver wasn't able to grasp the ball. There was some contact on that one but no flag from the officials.

The result is a punt. With 12:08 to go, Jacksonville is running out of time.

3:18 p.m. | End of third quarter: Chiefs 27, Jaguars 10

The Jaguars are going to need to score a lot of points, and fast.

3:12 p.m. | Touchdown Chiefs: KC pulls away on Travis Kelce TD

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense continue to add to the points.

The Chiefs responded to the Jaguars' three-point drive with a seven-point drive. After an acrobatic sideline reception by Kadarius Toney, Travis Kelce finished it off with a TD reception from Mahomes. That's four TDs on the day for the Chiefs QB.

Chiefs 27, Jaguars 10, 0:38 3rd.

3:02 p.m. | Field goal: Jaguars make kick after ineligible man flag wipes out TD

It's been a frustrating afternoon of missed opportunities for the Jags.

The Jags launched a 9:14 march to open the second half. They drove across midfield, converting a fourth down on Trevor Lawrence's slant pass to Zay Jones. Then, Doug Pederson tried a dose of trickery with a direct snap to Travis Etienne. Lawrence converted a third down inside the red zone with a pass to Christian Kirk.

Then, for the second time, an ineligible player downfield penalty — on the other offensive tackle, Cam Robinson, this time — wiped out a big play, a TD pass to Evan Engram. Lawrence threw out of the end zone under pressure on second down, then got sacked by Chris Jones on third down. That led to a Riley Patterson field goal from 36 yards. This was converted for three points — but not seven.

Chiefs 20, Jaguars 10, 5:46 1st.

2:49 p.m. | Jaguars, Chiefs kick off second half

Back to the action. The Jaguars will receive the second-half kickoff.

2:37 p.m. | HALFTIME: Jaguars miss field goal as time expires

That's an Ouch for Jags fans. Riley Patterson missed a second field goal, from 41 yards this time, and the Jaguars fail to take advantage of that special teams takeaway. Trevor Lawrence had set him up in kicking position with a quick sideline pass.

HALFTIME: Chiefs 20, Jaguars 7.

2:35 p.m. | Fumble! Chiefs lose kickoff, Jags recover

Another big special teams play. Caleb Johnson jars the ball loose on the Kansas City kickoff return and Adam Gotsis recovers with 7 seconds to halftime.

2:33 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Christian Kirk puts Jags on board

No matter the defense's woes, Trevor Lawrence is at least giving the Jaguars some hope at the end of the half. That was an excellent drive, 61 yards in 35 seconds.

The second-year QB launched a superb sideline throw to a diving Marvin Jones for a first down. Then, he took off running, zooming down to the Kansas City 10. From there, a 6-yard pass to Christian Kirk put the Jaguars into the end zone and on the board.

Chiefs 20, Jaguars 7, 0:11 2nd.

2:27 p.m. | Touchdown Chiefs: Noah Gray grabs TD catch

Touchdown, again. This one is looking like a Chiefs romp.

Jaguars safety Andre Cisco is in guided-missile mode. He delivered a huge hit on Marquez Valdes-Scantling to force another incompletion on this drive, which also didn't lead to a penalty. But other Jags are struggling in the tackling department, including three missed tackles on the ensuing play to Kadarius Toney.

Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes is keeping this Kansas City offense cruising along. He concluded this march up the field with a 13-yard TD pass to tight end Noah Gray. No Jaguars were anywhere close to Gray on the left sideline.

Chiefs 20, Jaguars 0, 0:46 2nd.

2:15 p.m. | Jags come up short on third down

The Jaguars are having no success in passing downfield. On third and 4, Trevor Lawrence threw short to Evan Engram, but the Chiefs wrapped him up short of the chains to lead to another Jacksonville punt.

2:09 p.m. | Injury stoppage for Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

There's a long stoppage with JuJu Smith-Schuster down on the field. The Kansas City receiver was on the receiving end of a massive hit from Jaguars safety Andre Cisco. The hit jarred the ball away for an incomplete pass. Officials did not throw a penalty flag on the collision.

When play resumes, the Chiefs will punt the ball away.

2:04 p.m. | Jaguars' offense stopped again

Another bad possession for the Jacksonville offense, complete with a penalty and a Trevor Lawrence overthrow on third down. Kansas City regains possession after a short punt.

1:57 p.m. | Touchdown Chiefs: Marquez Valdes-Scantling finds end zone

Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes are on cruise control.

The Jaguars have a deep hole to climb out of now. Kadarius Toney took a jet sweep for 32 yards against a Jacksonville defense that's way out of sync. Isiah Pacheco then hit the line for 9 yards before Mahomes lofted a pass to a wide-open Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the TD.

Chiefs 14, Jaguars 0, 9:55 2nd.

1:52 p.m. | Missed kick ends Jaguar drive

That was better from the Jaguars' offense — but no points to show for it. The ground game remains stuffed by Kansas City's defensive front, but Trevor Lawrence used a screen to Travis Etienne to pick up 24 yards on third-and-11 to cross midfield and approach field goal range.

But an ineligible man downfield flag on Jawaan Taylor halted the momentum on the drive. Khalen Saunders sacked Lawrence on second down, and JaMycal Hasty dropped a Lawrence pass on third. Riley Patterson tried a 51-yard field goal but missed wide left.

1:43 p.m. | Chiefs' drive ends after drop

Patrick Mahomes looked downfield for Marquez Valdes-Scantling on third down but the receiver wasn't able to come up with the ball. That means a punt, which Jamal Agnew returned to near midfield.

1:38 p.m. | End of first quarter: Chiefs 7, Jaguars 0

Not a great start for the Jaguars in Kansas City, in spite of a successful onside kick and a fumble recovery on defense.

1:34 p.m. | Two sacks end Jaguars drive

The Jaguars aren't protecting Trevor Lawrence and the Chiefs' pass rush is winning. Leo Chenal sacks the QB on second down and star defensive tackle Chris Jones downed him on third down to end the possession.

1:28 p.m. | Touchdown Chiefs: Kadarius Toney hops into end zone

Now that's a wacky-looking touchdown. Patrick Mahomes throws to an extremely-open Kadarius Toney in the flat, and the former Gator hops on one foot into the end zone along the sideline in a successful effort to stay in bounds.

The Chiefs made that drive look easy, thanks in part to the Jaguars' failure to cover Travis Kelce. The star tight end had nobody in his ZIP code when Mahomes found him with a 46-yard pass, which ultimately set up the Toney score. The Jags will have to come from behind once more.

Chiefs 7, Jaguars 0, 3:32 1st.

1:22 p.m. | Jaguars can't take advantage of takeaway

A couple of nice passes by Trevor Lawrence, but the Jaguars' possession again stalled out around midfield, following an unsuccessful designed run to Lawrence on third down. Logan Cooke's punt resulted in a touchback after a scramble around the end zone.

1:15 p.m. | Fumble! Devin Lloyd comes up with loose ball

Patrick Mahomes looked to be in command on that drive. He marched the Chiefs up the field, including a run for nearly 20 yards, and penetrated the red zone.

But Rayshawn Jenkins, who was questionable to play earlier in the week, jarred the ball loose from running back Isiah Pacheco and Devin Lloyd came up with the ball for the Jags.

1:07 p.m. | Jaguars' drive stalls after onside kick

Not the way the Jaguars wanted to build on that field position. The Jacksonville offense couldn't advance beyond the Kansas City 40 and punted the football away. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs now go to work.

1:03 p.m. | Onside kick — and Jaguars recover

Gamble time from Doug Pederson, and it pays off. The Chiefs were scheduled to receive that kickoff, but the Jags opened the afternoon with an onside kick and recovered the ball. Time for Trevor Lawrence and the offense.

1 p.m. | Jaguars, Chiefs ready for kickoff

It's kickoff time at a cold and windy Kansas City.
