College football final: Kentucky 38, No. 10 Louisville 31

The Kentucky Wildcats hit the road to take on the Louisville Cardinals in the annual Governor’s Cup game at L&N Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon on ABC.

Kentucky has won four straight games in the series, but the Cats enter the contest 6-5 on the season under coach Mark Stoops. Louisville is 10-1 under Jeff Brohm, the former U of L quarterback who is in his first year as the Cardinals’ head coach.

Final: Kentucky 38, Louisville 31

Fifth straight win for Kentucky over Louisville.

Kentucky on top 38-31 with 1:02 left

Ray Davis goes 37 yards for another touchdown and Kentucky is up 38-31 with just 1:02 left. That’s Davis’ third touchdown of the game.

We’re now tied at 31-31

Apologies for the spotty internet here at L and N Stadium. To make a long story shot, we are tied 31-31 with 2:33 to go. Louisville just scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass after intercepting an ill-advised Devin Leary throw. Kentucky took the lead 31-24 when the Cats cashed in on Louisville’s second consecutive fumble.

End of third quarter: Louisville 24, Kentucky 21

UK recovered a Louisville fumble near midfield just before the end of the third quarter.

By the way, the crowd of 59,225 is the largest in stadium history.

Suddenly we have a shootout

A 48-yard Isaac Guerendo kickoff return set up a Louisville drive that ended with an 11-yard TD pass from Jack Plummer to former UK quarterback Joey Gatewood. Kentucky answered right back with a 55-yard pass from Devin Leary to Izayah Cummings, followed by a 20-yard TD pass from Leary to Ray Davis. Louisville leads 24-21 with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

Barion Brown hits a home run

Barion Brown returns a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown as UK cuts Louisville’s lead to 17-14 with 5:38 left in the third quarter. It was Brown’s second kickoff return for a TD this season.

Louisville scores on opening possession of second half

Louisville’s first possession of game produced a 14-play, 70-yard TD drive.

Louisville’s first possession of the second half produced a 15-pay, 75-yard TD drive. Jawhar Jordan scored on a fourth-and-goal from the UK 1-yard line. All but one play of the drive were on the ground.

U of L outgained 152-97 on the way to a 10-7 lead at the half.

Kentucky had 16 yards rushing on 14 attempts in first half.

Brock Travelstead boots a 46-yard field goal with 4:25 left in the first half to give Louisville a 10-7 lead over Kentucky. A 29-yard pass from Jack Plummer to Kevin Coleman helped set up the field goal.

Kentucky ties game 7-7

Kentucky ties Louisville 7-7 with 8:07 left in first half. Cats drove 52 yards in nine plays with Devin Leary hitting Dane Key with a 9-yard TD pass. Great timing on the throw and TD catch. Key also had a 16-yard catch on the drive. Huge play on the drive was a Leary pass to freshman tight end Khamari Anderson for an 11-yard gain to the Louisville 41 on a third-and-10.

End of 1Q: Louisville 7, Kentucky 0

Two UK possessions, two U of L sacks. Cats must punt when we start second quarter. Louisville leads 7-0.

Louisville takes an early 7-0 lead

On its first possession, Louisville drives 70 yards in 14 plays for a 7-0 lead with 3:40 left in 1Q. Running back Jawhar Jordan scored from 1 yard out. Cards converted a 3rd-and-6 and a fourth-and-1 on the drive. Quarterback Jack Plummer ran the ball three times for 28 yards. Plummer came into the game with 41 yards rushing on 67 carries.

Kentucky had opened the game with a five plays and punt possession. Ray Davis’ 13 yard run picked up a first down at the Louisville 48, but the Cats went backward from there. Davis lost 4 yards. An incompletion was followed by UK quarterback Devin Leary being sacked for a 9-yard loss.
