As Election Day results roll in, stay up-to-date right here with the latest from reporters on the ground across the state. In an interview last week, Deputy Administrator for the State Board of Elections Nikki Charlson asked for patience from voters as the process proceeds. “Let the local election officials count all the ballots," she said. "That will take time, it always takes time.”

You can find election results as they roll in here.

Election Day Evening Update-Washington County Board of Elections (Washington County)

The work of election workers continues in the Washington County election headquarters, but the polls are now closed.

"It's been pretty slow and steady," said Washington County Deputy Election Director Barry Jackson, in an interview a few minutes before the polls closed, "which is back to a normal gubernatorial primary."

At about 7:30 p.m. a fleet of vehicles left the county's election headquarters to pick up ballots in the county's six drop boxes. Mail-in ballots will be counted starting on Thursday, July 21, Jackson said. With about 8,000 sent in Washington County and over a 100,000 sent in Montgomery County, results from close elections, including the 6th Congressional District primary, may not be known tonight.

Results from today's in-person voting are forthcoming and updates will be posted here.

Election Day Afternoon Update-Damascus Road Community Church (Frederick County)

Frederick County is important territory for both Democrats and Republicans after the state's final maps included all of the county in Congressional District 6. Candidates and campaign volunteers posted outside the Damascus Road Community Church in Mount Airy promoting their candidate through signs and shirts as voters made their way to the polls.

"I look for the character of the person," said MaryAnn Gaver, a Frederick County resident who moved to Mount Airy from Montgomery County, as she stood under a pop-up tent outside the church, promoting Republican state Del. Dan Cox for governor. Cox, who has received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, represented part of Frederick County in the state legislature since 2019.

Gaver's first indicator of character is an issue that has been in the national news a lot this summer, namely what is the candidate's view on abortion.

"Is someone going to stand for every single person to be born?" she said.

Republican candidate for governor Kelly Schulz, the state's former commerce secretary, said she is personally "pro-life" during a June appearance on Maryland Public Television's State Circle program. She also indicated that "nothing will change with respect to current Maryland law on this issue," noting a ballot measure passed by Marylanders to protect abortion 30 years ago.

The Trump-backed Cox and Schulz, backed by Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan, are the two top candidates in the Republican primary, according to June polling. Like Cox, Schulz represented Frederick County in the state legislature. Schulz was appointed to the Hogan administration in 2015.

Election Day Morning Update-Piney Branch Elementary School (Montgomery County)

Democratic candidate for governor Peter Franchot, the state's comptroller, arrived with his family at Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday for the first of a dozen scheduled visits to polling places across the state.

"I haven't gotten any numbers on the turnout," he said, "but the turnout has been low."

Montgomery County has over 100,000 residents who have requested a mail-in ballot, and the process of counting each of those votes may delay statewide results.

Election Day Morning Update-Takoma Park Elementary School (Montgomery County)

Montgomery County's Takoma Park is a prime place for candidates this morning. At least two candidates for governor and one candidate for lieutenant governor converged on area elementary schools that are serving as polling places today in an effort to garner last minute support.

"It's great to be here in the state of Maryland where we have volunteers and an engaged citizenry," said former state Del. Aruna Miller, a candidate for lieutenant governor on the ticket of former nonprofit executive Wes Moore, in an interview outside of Takoma Park Elementary School.

Miller expressed her gratitude for all the election workers across the state and called the day a "team effort."

Candidate for governor John King, former U.S. Secretary of Education under President Barack Obama, arrived at Takoma Park Elementary School with his family shortly after Miller. He too expressed his gratitude for those volunteering as election workers.

"It's outstanding that people are willing to give their time to try to make sure our democracy functions," King said.

"I just think about what today illustrates in my family history. My great-grandfather was enslaved in Gaithersburg, Maryland. My grandmother graduated from University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1894, and today, three generations removed from slavery, I'm on the ballot," he said. "That's a powerful statement about the progress that's possible."
