The Secretary of State predicted that about 850,000 ballots would be cast in this year’s Democratic primary contests and more than 300,000 votes will be registered in the GOP contests.

Winners of Tuesday’s races move on to the general election on November 8th.

9 p.m. - William Galvin is the projected winner of the Democratic primary for secretary of state

8:30 p.m. - Attorney General Maura Healey won the Democratic primary for Massachusetts governor

Healey, whose only rival for the nomination dropped out of the race but remained on the ballot, will be the heavy favorite in November against the winner of the Republican primary.

2:45 p.m. - Voting hours in one Cape Cod town have been extended following a mechanical issue with the town clerk’s vault.

Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin has obtained an order from a Suffolk Superior Court judge requiring Barnstable to keep polling places open until midnight tonight.

“Galvin filed a complaint with the court after a mechanical issue with the town clerk’s vault caused the clerk to be unable to access ballots and delayed the delivery of ballots to polling locations,” a spokesperson for the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth said in a statement. “The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Elections Division ordered the town clerk this morning to print emergency paper ballots and deliver them to polling locations, so that voters would have the opportunity to vote while the town continued to attempt to access the clerk’s vault.”

1:15 p.m. - Barnstable Town Clerk just spoke on the vault and ballot issues

Ann Quirk has been working for the town since 2013 and said all ballots will be counted today, no matter what.

There is no word on how the vault ended up breaking overnight but election officials have been working tirelessly to resolve the issue.

9:30 a.m. - Crews drilling into the vault in Barnstable as workers start printing paper ballots

The clerk is now printing emergency paper ballots for voters in Barnstable to use while work crews continue to work on the vault holding the town’s ballots. Paper ballots will be identical to machine-readable ballots, but will need to be hand-counted at the end of the night.

The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office is exploring all options, including extending voting hours, to make sure everyone in Barnstable is able to vote Tuesday.

9:00 a.m. - The Democratic Candidates for attorney general cast their votes

The attorney general’s race on the Democratic side features former Boston city councilor Andrea Campbell and labor attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan.

Campbell has the backing of Sen. Edward J. Markey, Rep. Ayanna S. Pressley, and Maura Healey. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu have endorsed Liss-Riordan. Recent polling indicates this is one of the tightest primary races.

The winner would face Republican James McMahon or Bourne who is running unopposed in his primary.

8:30 a.m. - The race is on for the next Governor of Massachusetts.

Geoff Diehl and Chris Doughty, are vying for the chance to replace incumbent Republican Gov. Charlie Baker as they were seen casting their vote in their hometowns of Whitman and Wrentham.

Leah Allen, a Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, is aligned with Diehl, the Trump-endorsed candidate for governor, while Kate Campanale, also is also running for lieutenant governor on the Republican side, is aligned with Doughty.

However, the races are separate on the ballot; the governor and lieutenant governor are not elected as running mates.

Maura Healey is poised to be the Democratic candidate for the next governor

Healey, the current state attorney general, is running for governor on the Democratic side against State Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz, who ended her campaign in June, although Chang-Diaz’s name remains on the ballot.

7:30 a.m. - Voters are contending with delays in Cape Cod town

Voters in Barnstable are advised that the opening of the polls has been delayed on Tuesday, due to mechanical issues with the town clerk’s vault.

The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Elections Division was notified by the Barnstable town clerk that the clerk’s vault, which is used to store ballots, was unable to be opened. As a result, the clerk has been unable to access ballots to send to polling places.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
