9:48 p.m. -- Griego's passing got better as the game progressed, particularly in the second half. The Scorpions played from behind much of the game, however, and Griego's playmaking decisions are going to need to get better in a hurry. Flushed out of the pocket, Griego's 4th down pass was almost picked. Instead, it's a turnover on downs and PV ball at the FHS 38 with 9:54 left in the game.

PV appears to be content with running the ball and the clock. 5 yard gain on first down. Ramsted with no gain and illegal shift penalty backed up PV, as did an ensuing holding penalty. Vigil gets open again on a slant route and Howell connects for a long gain, with first and goal on the 5. Three plays later, Howell keeper off tackle scores again. The PAT is blocked, which makes it a 53-24 lead with 7:09 left in the game.

The Panthers are well on their way to victory in this one.... the milk jug is coming back to Piedra Vista. We're headed downstairs for quotes and stuff.

Thanks for spending the game with us!

9:38 p.m. -- Jacob Ramsted pushes his way into the endzone for another Panther touchdown. The PAT was blocked and thus, the Panther lead extends to 47-24 with 10:45 remaining in the game.

9:33 p.m. -- FHS punt was short, PV takes over on the 34-yard line. A pass interference call moves the ball to the 19. Ramsted gained 6 yards as the third quarter comes to a close. PIEDRA VISTA 41-FARMINGTON 24

9:23 p.m. -- PV needs some spark on offense, and they got it on third-and-long with a 20-yard pass completion to Manuel Montelongo out to the 29 yard line. Logan Howell gets another Panther first down with a scramble out to the 48-yard line. Dax Vigil got away from a pair of Scorpion defenders and Howell hit him with a perfect pass, resulting in a 52-yard touchdown. The PAT is no good and PV leads 41-24 with 1:10 remaining in the third.

9:13 p.m. -- PV commits a major error on a punt attempt as the snap goes over the head of the punter, eventually recovered by FHS at the 9-yard line. Ethan Tsosie gets 4 yards on first down. Griego makes a great throw to Jevon Smith coming out of a slant route on the far side for another FHS touchdown. The PAT attempt is blocked (FHS 0-for-4 on PAT attempts, meaning a loss of 7 points). FHS has cut the margin even more now, trailing 35-24 with 4:49 left in the third.

9:05 p.m. -- Playing from far behind, FHS is hoping to get something going.... Griego complete to Jevon Smith, then a pair of completions to Josiyah Archuleta. Trel Griego's three straight keepers results in a first down. Archuleta again gets a soft spot in the middle of the field for a 9-yard completion. Griego made his best throw of the night, finding Archuleta sprinting down the far sideline for a TD. The 2-point conversion fails again and PV's lead is trimmed to 35-18 with 6:56 left in the third quarter.

8:56 p.m. -- And just when we thought it was turning into a game, Bryce Joshlin returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The PAT is good and Piedra Vista leads 35-12 with 9:48 to go in the third quarter.

8:53 p.m. -- Opening kickoff for the second half goes out of bounds, but not before it was sloppily played by Vigil before it crossed the sideline stripe. PV starts at their own 13. PV goes backwards on a holding penalty, then gets much of that back on a short outlet pass. Ramsted carries the ball out to the 19. PV turns the ball over after a pass completion and fumble. FHS recovers at the 27. The Scorpions needed that!

No gain on first down for FHS, Michael Beck on an end-around picks up 8 yards. Illegal substitution on PV results in automatic first down at the 12. Griego keeps the ball around the right tackle and picks up 6 yards. Josiyah Archuleta sprinted off the left guard and scored a Scorpion touchdown. A much-needed turnaround for the Scorps, who come up short on the 2-point play, making it 28-12 with 10:01 left in the third.

8:38 p.m. -- As both teams take the field for the second half, the obvious thing to be stated here is that FHS cannot let PV go down the field on the opening drive. If the Panthers strike on this opening possession here, this will be ugly.

8:18 p.m. -- HALFTIME, Piedra Vista 28 - Farmington 6

Also, entering the third quarter, Shiprock leads Tohatchi 7-0. Aztec leads Miyamura 27-7.

8:16 p.m. -- FHS will need to make something happen with their final drive of the half. PV will open the second half receiving the kickoff. Greigo on a keeper picks up 8. First down on short pass to Josiyah Archuleta followed by another short pass in the flat to Archuleta. Dax Vigil picked off an errant Griego pass and returned it 60 yards for what has to be a back-breaking score before the break. The PAT is good and the Panthers are in control 28-6 with 18 seconds left in the half.

8:10 p.m. -- The FHS drive opened with a 15-yard pass interference penalty, getting the ball out of the shadow of the end zone. FHS moves the ball efficiently to the 42 yard line as the clock rolls under four minutes left in the half. The drive stalled after a turnover on downs, with PV taking over at the FHS 45.

Logan Howell on a keeper gained 11 and earned a first down, followed by Zach Mora-Dotson grinding out 7 more yards. Howell found Bryce Joshlin wide open down the sideline for another Panther touchdown. The PAT made the score 21-6 with 1:45 left in the half.

8 p.m. -- Farmington's offense has been slow to find its rhythm. They run a lot of motion in the backfield, but Trel Griego's passes have been off the mark so far tonight. Two straight corner routes into the end zone came up short inside the 25-yard line, resulting in a turnover on downs.

PV immediately began to move the ball, with a first down running play and getting 15 more yards on an unsportsmanlike conduct flag on the Scrops.

Both teams are having their share of penalties called against them. Opening night jitters, crosstown rivalry, emotions are high.

On 2nd and long, Howell was sacked for a loss of 19 yards, brining up 3rd down and 34. The PV drive went backwards almost the entire time, and on 4th and 24, the punt rolls all the way to the FHS 10.

7:45 p.m. -- On the third play of the second quarter, Howell kept the snap from the 2-yard line and punched it into the end zone, giving PV a 14-6 lead after the extra point attempt.

7:40 p.m. -- FHS couldn't do much with the INT, and instead punted back to PV. Dax Vigil took the punt at their own 27 yard line and returned it 34 yards to get inside the FHS 30-yard line. Jacob Ramsted kept the drive going with a sweep to the left and a first down just inside the 20. On 3rd and short inside the 15, the Panthers got FHS defense to jump, setting up first and goal to go.

As the first quarter ends, PV leads the Scorpions 7-6.

7:30 p.m. -- The opening kickoff got the scoring started for FHS, when Michael Beck took the kick 90+ yards for an opening touchdown. The ensuing 2-point conversion attempt failed, but the Scorpions struck first in the game's first 13 seconds.

The Panthers responded with a strong drive that ended with a TD run from quarterback Logan Howell from 17 yards out. The PAT was good and PV took a 7-6 lead with less than seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Big crowd here tonight at the Hutch, and the crowd is being treated to a well-played game and back and forth so far.

PV squandered an opportunity later in the quarter when Howell underthrew his intended target, the ball picked off by Farmington's Alex Serrano at their own 23-yard line.

6:05 p.m. -- Just getting settled in here at Hutchison Stadium. The crowds are slowly filing in and it's only moderately overcast here as far as the weather is concerned. We'll provide updates throughout the game once we get back into the pressbox after getting some early game photos.

Here's a look at the preseason coaches poll, as released this week by NMOT Sports.

3:45 p.m. -- At the moment, the forecast of rain and thunderstorms appears to have been tapered off a bit, as the National Weather Service now is calling for only a 20 percent chance of "a stray shower or thunderstorm" for tonight. That's good news for everyone involved. More to come when we get to the stadium.
