Wrapping up the six MIAA high school hockey state championships

Less than a month ago, 35 South Shore high school hockey teams earned spots in the MIAA state tournament.

There were 24 boys teams and 11 girls teams that earned tickets to the dance. Heading into Sunday's state finals, three boys and two girls teams remained.

The Archbishop Williams boys basketball team kicked off the South Shore state-championship slate by winning its first state title on Saturday with a 76-71 win over St. Mary's (Lynn) in the Div. 3 finals.

The Sailors quest for the Div. 3 boys title ended with a 2-1 defeat in overtime.

“Both goalies played an outstanding hockey game. We knew (Mattocks) was a good one coming in to the game, so we tried to make him move off his mark a little bit,” Scituate coach Brian Hurcombe said.

DIV. 2 GIRLS: Shrewsbury 1, St. Mary's 0 (End of second period)

The Colonial led 1-0 after the first period thanks to a goal from Taylor Ryder.

The Spartans have had a busy weekend. The girls and boys basketball played in the state finals on Saturday and now the girls hockey team is getting ready to take the ice at the TD Garden.

This is Shrewsbury's first trip to a state final while St. Mary's is playing in the final for the seventh time, but first since 2013.

DIV. 3 BOYS: Nashoba 2, Scituate 1(FINAL)

With 3:54 left in overtime, Nashoba's Joe Quinn scores. That ends another epic state final. Great show of sportsmanship from both sides after the game following an extremely hard-fought battle.

The goaltenders have been absolutely stellar in this third period. Both offenses have had chances to go ahead, but Nashoba's Charlie Mattocks and Scituate's Thomas McMellen have had other thoughts. McMellen has 20 stops while Mattocks has 17.

We'll head to overtime for the second time today.

In Div. 1 boys action, Pope Francis defeated Xaverian in a thriller.

In Div. 2 and 3 boys action, locals Canton and Norwell were victorious.

DIV. 3 BOYS: Scituate 1, Nashoba 1 (end of the second period)

The puck spent a good portion of the second period in Scituate's attacking zone (12-6 shots-on-goal advantage) and it yielded the Sailors one goal, the equalizer from Jimmy Sullivan within the first minute of the period.

DIV. 3 BOYS: Scituate 1, Nashoba 1 (14:12 remaining in the second period)

Junior Jimmy Sullivan gets the Sailors on the board with a power-play goal just 48 seconds into the second period. Johnny Donohue and Teagan Pratt each picked up an assist on the play.

DIV. 3 BOYS: Nashoba 1, Scituate 0 (end of the first period)

At the end of the first period, the Nashoba goal by Sam Mongeon is the game's only tally. The Sailors have out-shot the Wolves, 7-4, through the first 15 minutes of play.

DIV. 3 BOYS: Nashoba 1, Scituate 0 (8:27 remaining in the first period)

Nashoba's Joe Quinn shoveled a pass to Sam Mongeon in front, and senior forward's goal put the Wolves on the board first, at the 8:27 mark of the opening period.

Div. 3 BOYS: Scituate, Nashoba Regional

The No. 1 Scituate High boys hockey team (20-4-2) is going up against No. 11 Nashoba Regional (15-5-5) for the Division 3 State Championship. This is the Sailors first state championship appearance since 2017 (loss to Lowell Catholic 5-4 Div. 2). Teagan Pratt and James Sullivan are going in as the leading scorers for Scituate.

Div. 4 BOYS: Norwell 4, Sandwich 3 (FINAL)

Unassisted, Norwell's Timmy Ward netted the game-winning goal at the 4:29 mark of overtime to clinch the top-ranked Clippers the first state title in program history.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 3, Sandwich 3 (end of regulation)

The Clippers and Blue Knights will compete in an 8-minute, 4-on-4, sudden-death overtime period.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 3, Sandwich 3 (7:10 remaining in the third period)

A loose puck floated into the crease and Sandwich's Avery Richardson scored the tying goal on a Blue Knights power play with 7:10 to play in the third period.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 3, Sandwich 2 (end of the second period)

Norwell's Austin Shea ended the second period in style by burying a goal with 41 seconds to go, assisted by Aedan Coyle, to put the Clippers back in front.

The Blue Knights scored two goals (courtesy of junior Jack Connolly and senior Colin McIver) in the second period to even the score after falling in a 2-0 deficit early.

The Clippers maintain a 22-14 shots-on-goal advantage heading into the third.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 2, Sandwich 2 (2:40 remaining in the second period)

Sandwich junior Jack Connolly glided across the crease to score the equalizer inside three minutes to play in the second period.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 2, Sandwich 1 (9:31 remaining in the second period)

The Blue Knights get on the board as senior Colin McIver regained possession in the neutral zone and cruised in for solo breakaway. The goal slices the deficit in half midway through the second period.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 2, Sandwich 0 (13:33 remaining in the second period)

A cluster in front of the Sandwich net feeds a rebound chance to Norwell's Nolan Petrucelli for the Clippers' second goal of the afternoon. Joe Perniola recorded an assist on the play.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 1, Sandwich 0 (end of the first period)

A goal from Norwell's Quinn Simmons was the difference, as the Clippers have boasted a 13-5 shots-on-goal advantage. Both goaltenders, Norwell's Sean Donovan and Sandwich's Mitchell Norkevicius, have made some impressive stops so far.

DIV. 4 BOYS: Norwell 1, Sandwich 0 (5:52 remaining in the first period)

Norwell junior forward Quinn Simmons finds the back of the net, on assists from Austin Shea and Nolan Petrucelli, with 5:52 to go in the opening period. The Clippers have already put nine shots on net, compared to Sandwich's two.

Next up: Norwell vs. Sandwich in the Div. 4 state final

Norwell and Sandwich will face off in the Div. 4 final with puck set to drop at 3:30 p.m. It's the days only matchup between the top two seeds in the Division. Last season, the Blue Knights defeated Norwell in the state semifinals en route to winning the state final.

Keep an eye on the first lines in this one. Timmy Ward, Quinn Simmons and Austin Shea play on Norwell's top line while Colin McIver, Jack Connolly and Christopher Cardillo form Sandwich's first line.

Duxbury girls claim first title since 2014

The Dragons got goals from four different players, three of which were underclassmen, in a 5-2 win over Canton in the Division 2 girls final. That game kicked off hockey-filled day.

“It’s been nine years now, and we’ve got Duxbury girls hockey back on top. I couldn’t be prouder of the seven seniors that are in the locker room, plus all the underclassmen that stepped up and took the bull by the horns.”

DIV. 1 BOYS: Pope Francis 3, Xaverian 2 (FINAL)

Senior Josh Iby scored two goals as No. 4 Pope Francis (21-2-3) clinches its first-ever Div. 1 state title.

For Xaverian, locals Devin Gosciak (Easton) and Sean Connolly (Milton) scored and Jackson Morse (Raynham) recorded an assist. State title runners-up, the No. 7 Hawks finish the season with a 16-8-1 overall record.

Josh Iby's second goal of the afternoon breaks the tie with 25.6 to go as the Pope Francis senior scores on a rebound chance.

Xaverian goaltender Cole Pouliot-Porter made a crucial save on a Pope Francis rush with 1:15 remaining.

DIV. 1 BOYS: Xaverian 2, Pope Francis 2 (midway through third period)

The Xaverian penalty kill unit silences a Pope Francis power play with 8:33 remaining.

DIV. 1 BOYS: Xaverian 2, Pope Francis 2 (end of the second period)

Pope Francis' Ryan O'Leary evened the score to end the period by tipping in an airborne set-up from Nick Petkovich with 2:39 left until intermission.

Xaverian's Sean Connolly, of Milton, paid off a strong defensive stand from goaltender Cole Pouliot-Porter and defenseman Matt Dion, of Marshfield, by scoring a short-handed goal at the 12:15 mark of the second period.

DIV. 1 BOYS: Xaverian 1, Pope Francis 1 (end of the first period)

The two teams traded goals early, as Xaverian's Devin Gosciak, of Easton, scored on an odd-man rush and Pope Francis' Josh Iby scored on a one-timer the other way. Xaverian's Jackson Morse, of Raynham, and Pope Francis' Jacob Jerrell recorded the assists.

The Hawks return to the state finals for the second consecutive year after losing to St. John’s Prep last season. The No. 7 Hawks finished 12-8 during the regular season before rattling off tournament wins over No. 26 Shrewsbury (9-1), No. 10 Belmont (5-2), No. 2 Catholic Memorial (2-1) and No. 14 Reading (1-0 in overtime).

Pope Francis makes it first final appearance since making three consecutive trips to the Super 8 final from 2018-2020. The Cardinals were declared co-champs with Arlington in 2020 when the state final was cancelled due to COVID-19.

During the tournament, No. 4 Pope Francis defeated No. 29 Bishop Feehan (4-1), No. 13 Wellesley (3-2 in overtime), No. 5 Marshfield (3-2) and No. 1 St. John’s Prep (1-0).

DIV. 2 BOYS: Canton 3, Hopkinton 1 (FINAL)

The Bulldogs win the state title behind goals from Brendan Tourgee and Brian Middleton late in the second period. Jeffrey Chaput adds an insurance tally with 2:55 remaining in the third period. AJ Thomas scored an empty-net goal with 25.9 seconds remaining.

Hopkinton goaltender Jack Lang plays well in the loss while Pavit Mehra scored the goal for the Hillers.

The title is Canton's fourth in program history and third since 2019.

DIV. 2 BOYS: Canton 3, Hopkinton 1 (2:55 left in the third period)

A lot of back-and-forth action this period, but the Bulldogs continue to hold a 2-1 lead.

The lid appears to be off. Ninety-five seconds after Brendan Tourgee got the Bulldogs on the board, Canton's Brian Middleton puts his team ahead 2-1. Canton scores twice in the final two minutes of the period to jump ahead.

The Bulldogs finally break through despite holding a 21-6 edge in shots. Brendan Tourgee ties the game at 1-1 with 1:48 left in the middle frame.

Hopkinton goaltender Jack Lang made a couple of stellar saves. After making a pad save, he denied a rebound bid with his glove hand. That might be the save of the day.

Like the girls, the Canton boys return to the state final after losing last year.

Canton rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the second intermission to defeat Duxbury, 3-1, in the state semifinals.

Sunday marks the fourth consecutive tournament the Canton boys reached the final game. In 2019, the Bulldogs defeated Tewksbury, 6-2, in the state final. In 2020, Canton was declared co-state champions with Lincoln-Sudbury due to COVID-19. There was no state tournament in 2021 before Canton returned for the 2022 final with a 3-1 loss to Tewksbury.

DIV. 2 GIRLS: Duxbury 5, Canton 2 (FINAL)

The Dragons win their first state title since 2014 behind goals from four different scorers. Madeleine Greenwood nets two in the win.

Addyson Harrington adds a big insurance tally for the Dragons. Just over a minute later, Duxbury's Parker Metzler takes a big hit but finishes at the mouth of the goal.

DIV. 2 GIRLS: Duxbury 3, Canton 2 (5:19 left in the third period)

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 3-2 as Audrey Koen scores on a power play off a feed from Maya Battista.

DIV. 2 GIRLS: Duxbury 3, Canton 1 (10:00 left in the third period)

Chances have been limited for both sides to start the third period.

The Dragons re-take a two-goal lead late in the period. McKenna Colella puts a shot on goal, but before it gets there Madeleine Greenwood redirects the shot for her second goal of the day. That puts a damper on what was a strong period for the Bulldogs.

Tori Carr scored for the Bulldogs and Canton had several chances while on a power play.

Duxbury holds a 10-8 edge in shots heading into the third period.

DIV. 2 GIRLS: Duxbury 2, Canton 1 (3:00 left in second period)

Duxbury's McKenna Colella goes to the penalty box for an interference. The Dragons kill off the penalty, but not without some tense moments.

The ice is shifting Canton's way more this period, but the Bulldogs are still looking for an equalizer.

The Bulldogs are on the board. Canton defenseman Tori Carr puts a shot from the blue line on net through a lot of traffic and it finds twine. Ellie Bohane and Audrey Koen were credited with assists on the goal.

McKenna Colella with another great move to the get to the net. This time her backhand bid goes just over the far post. Canton still struggling to create offense and the Bulldogs have just one shot on goal.

The Dragons are pitching a defensive gem early and making the most of their opportunities. Canton mustered just one shot on goal while the game was mostly played in Canton's end.

There's been a feeling-out period to start this game. Both teams have two of the best goalies in the state in Carolyn Durand (Canton) and Anna McGinty (Duxbury). No shortage of blocked shots as both teams only have one shot through just over six minutes of play.

First up: Canton vs. Duxbury girls

Teams are now on the ice for the day's first game.

The Bulldogs are no strangers to TD Garden. A year ago, Canton lost to Algonquin, 2-1, in overtime in the Div. 2 state final. In 2020, Canton was slated to play Wellesley in the Div. 2 state final, but COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the game and the Bulldogs were declared co-state champions.

The Dragons are making their first trip back to the TD Garden for the first time since 2014. Duxbury won four consecutive state titles from 2011-2014.

The Dragons are 4-0 all-time in state finals, while Canton is 0-5 (not including the 2020 co-state championship).

Duxbury and Canton played to a 1-1 tie on Feb. 11.

South Shore well represented

As we already mentioned, the South Shore has a stake in all but two of Sunday's six state championships.

The day starts off with a Canton doubleheader. The Canton girls face off against a familiar foe in Duxbury at 9 a.m. in the Div. 2 finals. The Canton boys play at 11 a.m. against Hopkinton in a Div. 2 final.

There's a break in the local action until 3 p.m. (although Xaverian has a bunch of locals in the 1 p.m. Div. 1 final against Pope Francis), as the Norwell boys hockey team is vying for the program's first state title against defending champion Sandwich.

The Scituate boys cap off the local flare in the Div. 3 final at 5:30 p.m. against Nashoba.
