Recap: NCAA Wrestling Championships Day 3 team scores, results, analysis and matchups

All-American wrestlers are introduced in the finals during the sixth session of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships last season.

DETROIT, Mich. — Greetings from Little Caesars Arena, and welcome to the final day of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

The Hawkeyes, the 2021 NCAA team champs, secured a third-place team finish on Saturday morning after going 5-2 overall — 2-1 in wrestleback matches, then 3-2 in medal matches.

Iowa has now won 13 team trophies (top-four finish) in 15 national tournaments under head coach Tom Brands. Penn State clinched the team title outright on Saturday morning, while Michigan secured second and Arizona State sits fourth.

Iowa State went 3-0 in medal matches, with David Carr (157), Marcus Coleman (184) and Yonger Bastida (197) all capping their respective tournaments with victories. Northern Iowa's Parker Keckeisen also took third at 184 pounds for his second All-American finish.

The Register's Cody Goodwin and Joe Cress are both in Detroit this week and will provide updates, commentary, photos, stories and analysis from the competition.

Iowa's Jacob Warner falls to Penn State's Max Dean in NCAA finals

Jacob Warner, a junior for the Iowa wrestling program, lost to Penn State's Max Dean, 3-2, in the NCAA finals at 197 pounds on Saturday night.

The Illinois native stormed to the championship as the 6-seed this week, beating Nebraska's Eric Schultz, the 3-seed, Wyoming's Stephen Buchanan, the 2-seed, and then Dean, the 1-seed. He outscored his first four opponents 19-5.

In Saturday night's final, Warner led 1-0 on an escape 14 seconds into the second period. Dean leveled the match with his own escape 16 seconds into the third, then countered a shot from Warner and scored a takedown with 36 seconds left in the match. That sequence held up as the match-winner for Dean.

Warner caps his season with a 21-6 overall record. He is now a three-time NCAA All-American. He took seventh in 2019 and fourth last season.
