Storms move through north Georgia, downing trees and power lines, leaving 1 dead

Strong storms with heavy rain and gusty winds moved through north Georgia Tuesday morning, downing trees, flooding roads and leaving thousands without power.

One person was killed when a tree fell on a car in Clayton County.

Multiple school districts canceled or delayed classes.

A brief tornado warning was issued for Clayton, DeKalb and Fulton counties around 8:15 a.m. but it has since been dropped.

Much of north Georgia remained under flash flood warnings Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday night, Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz said temperatures will fall into the 30s across north Georgia. Flurries and light snow showers are possible. Elevated and grassy surfaces in north Georgia could see a dusting of snow.

In Forsyth County, Nicholson Road atOld Federal/Montclair Hills has some flooding issues causing the roadway to be closed.

Below are the Spalding County roadways that should be temporarily closed until the Emergency Level is downgraded below Potential Failure. There is no danger to the dam, bridges or homes in this area. This is a precaution to ensure the integrity of the roadway can support normal vehicle traffic.

Once the roadways are inspected and cleared normal traffic may resume.

The National Weather Service shared a photo of the flooded parking lot of a Ross store in Covington.

The tornado watch has been shifted to parts of east Georgia including Emanuel, Glascock, Jefferson, Johnson, Laurens, Montgomery, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Warren, Washinton and Wheeler counties until 2 p.m.

11:51 a.m.

TRAVEL ADVISORY due to Flooding on I-285/nb (Outer Loop) at Lavista Road (exit 37). The two left lanes are closed. Delays. Use Caution through Tucker.

10:50 a.m.

All lanes are blocked on SR 10 loop at MLK Jr. Pkwy in Clarke County due to road flooding.

10:40 a.m.

Brogden Road is currently closed down between New Hope Road and Longview Road in Fayette County due to down trees and power lines blocking the roadways.

10:39 a.m.

All lanes are blocked on SR 360 E at Richmond Dr. in Paulding County due to road flooding.

10:38 a.m.

Flooding has all lanes blocked on SR 92 W at Mansell Rd. in Fulton County. Use caution and seek alt. routes.

More than 3,000 people are out of power in the West Village area of Vinings.

All lanes are blocked on SR 212 at Pickett Bridge Rd. in Newton County due to a downed tree. Avoid travel in this direction and use alt. routes.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Habersham and Rabun counties until 3 p.m.

Northside Drive is flooded at Wells Street and a few cars are stuck. Water rescues are underway.

9:54 a.m.

The tornado watch has been extended to Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Crawford, Emmanuel, Glascock, Hancock, Houston, Jones, Jefferson, Johnson, Laurens, Macon, Montgomery, Peach, Schley, Taylor, Tombs, Truetlen, Twiggs, Warren, Washington, Wheeler and Wilkinson counties until 2 p.m.

FAA extends ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to 9:45 a.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport until 9:30 a.m. according to the FAA website.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Henry, Newton, Rockdale and Spalding counties until 3 p.m.

The severe thunderstorm warning in DeKalb, Clayton and Fulton counties has been dropped.

Due to high water and road closures throughout the county, Chattooga County Schools will be closed Tuesday.

8:39 a.m.

A flash Flood Warning has been issued for Coweta, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties until 2:45pm Tuesday.

Two of five lanes are blocked on I-20 E at SR 155/Candler Rd. in DeKalb County due to a crash.

The tornado warning has been dropped. A severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect for DeKalb, Clayton and Fulton counties until 8:45 a.m..

Wells Fargo Bank in Floyd County on Redmond Road reports a minor roof collapse. Crews are on scene. The bank is closed for the day.
