Live updates: See results in the 2023 Mississippi Coast primary election

Mississippi Coast voters chose sheriffs in all three counties and sent other races to runoffs during 2023 primary elections on Tuesday.

Most races were on the Republican ticket, which means voters chose winners on Tuesday for races that did not result in runoffs and that have no challengers in the November general election.

Here are the headlines from Tuesday night.

Tate Reeves wins GOP primary for governor

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves has won Tuesday’s Republican primary election over two lesser-known challengers.

The Associated Press called the race about 8:15 p.m.

Reeves will advance to the November general election where he will face off with Democrat Brandon Presley, who won the Democratic primary because he was unopposed. — Blake Kaplan, 8:30 p.m.

Delbert Hosemann wins GOP primary for lieutenant governor

Incumbent Delbert Hosemann has won the Mississippi primary race for lieutenant governor, beating out Chris McDaniel and Tiffany Longino, the New York Times has called. —Blake Kaplan, 11:45 p.m.

Matt Haley wins Harrison County sheriff’s race

Matt Haley wins the Harrison County sheriff’s race with 53% of the vote. —Mary Perez, 9:20 p.m.

Haley defeated long-time deputy Louis Elias. Haley took an early lead but the race grew tight about halfway through the night and the two candidates were separated by just 12 votes around 8:30 p.m.

Haley maintained his lead and faces no Democratic challenger.

Sheriff Ricky Adam wins in Hancock County

Sheriff Ricky Adam reclaims his seat as Hancock County sheriff. —Justin Mitchell, 9:27 p.m.

He defeated a field of three Republican challengers. With no Democratic challenger, Adam will once again serve as sheriff of Hancock County.

Sheriff John Ledbetter wins in Jackson County

John Ledbetter wins the Jackson County Sheriff’s race with 65% of the vote. —Allen Frazier, 10:54 p.m.

Ledbetter was named interim sheriff after former sheriff Cong. Mike Ezell retired in January. Ledbetter led the race throughout the night and defeated three Republican contenders.

He will not face a Democratic challenger.

Hancock County Chancery Clerk’s race heads to runoff

There will be a runoff in the Chancery Clerk’s race between Tiffany Lee Cowman and Kodie Koennen. —Justin Mitchell, 9:27 p.m.

Earlier Tuesday night, Cowman took some districts in Diamondhead, which were expected to be a stronghold for Kodie Koennen, a former Diamondhead councilman.

The runoff will take place Aug. 29. The winner of that primary will face Democrat Henry Ward in the November general election.

Dan Cuevas beats incumbent Beverly Martin for Harrison County District 1 Supervisor

Dan Cuevas pulls an upset, beating incumbent supervisor Beverly Martin in Harrison County District 1. Cuevas won 1,795 votes to Martin’s 1,630. —Mary Perez, 9:21 p.m.

Incumbent Supervisor Beverly Martin took a small and early lead about 8:30 p.m. But just after 9 p.m., Cuevas had pulled ahead.

There are no Democratic challengers, so Cuevas’ win decides the supervisor’s race.

Other supervisor races called in Harrison County

Other winners in the Harrison County Supervisor races are Rebecca Powers in District 2, Kent Jones in District 4 and Nathan Barrett in District 5. —Mary Perez, 9:28 p.m.

All three led their races throughout Tuesday night.

Races called in Jackson County

In the results for the Supervisor District 2 race, Incumbent Ennis Morris has 925 votes. Felix ‘Fefe’ Fornett had 553 votes and Mitch Ellerby had 465. — Allen Frazier, 10:52 p.m.

  • K. Shane Langfitt wins Constable District 3 with 57% of the vote. — Allen Frazier, 11 p.m.

  • Jason Thornton wins Justice Court District 3 with 60% of the vote. — Allen Frazier, 10:58 p.m.

  • Randy Bosage wins race for Board of Supervisors District 5 with 55% of the vote. — Allen Frazier, 10:56 p.m.

Here’s how the night played out in Hancock County

The second precinct has been counted in Hancock County, with Ricky Adam continuing his lead in the sheriff’s race and Tiffany Lee Cowman advancing slightly ahead of Bradford in the Chancery Clerk race. There are still several precinct boxes to count. — Justin Mitchell, 8:15 p.m.

The first precinct, Waveland west, has been called in Hancock County and Ricky Adam is leads his competitors in the sheriff’s race. The chancery clerk’s race is neck and neck, with Jordan Bradford receiving 151 votes and Tiffany Lee Cowman garnering 147 out of 484 total votes. — Justin Mitchell, 8:05 p.m.

Boxes have started to arrive at the Hancock County courthouse in downtown Bay St. Louis. Dozens are inside waiting for the count to start. Supporters of Sheriff Ricky Adam are gathered on the lawn outside waiting for results. — Justin Mitchell, 7:40 p.m.

Hosemann leads in Lieutenant Governor’s race

Live updates: Reeves, Presley win primaries for governor, plus more MS election results

Over half the state’s votes are in, and incumbent Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann has taken the lead against challenger Chris McDaniel, who is having an election night party in Biloxi. Hosemann has about 53 percent of the vote so far, with McDaniel getting about 42 percent. McDaniel had a lead earlier in the night, but it did not hold up for long. — Blake Kaplan, 9:29 p.m.

House races:

  • Jimmy Fondren won District 111, which covers Pascagoula and other parts of Jackson County, with 70% of the vote.

  • District 115, which covers Biloxi and parts of D’Iberville, will head to a runoff between Zachary Grady and Felix Gines. Grady has 47% of the vote over Gines, a Biloxi councilman, but did not get the needed 50%.

When will remaining races be called?

Votes will be counted into Tuesday night.

Races with three or more candidates will be decided if any candidate gains more than 50% of the vote Tuesday night. Undecided races will head to an Aug. 29 runoff between the top two candidates.
