Sunland Derby won by long shot
Wild On Ice, a 35-1 longshot, won the Sunland Derby for trainer Joel Marr and jockey Ken Tohill. The winning owner was Frank Sumpter, Sr. Wild On Ice has won three of five starts and earns 50 qualifying points to the Kentucky Derby.
Flying Connection wins Sunland Oaks
Flying Connection, who is trained by Todd Fincher rolled to a more than two length win in the Sunland Oaks. Flying Connection has won four of seven races. Alfredo Juarez, Jr. was winning jockey. Flying Connection has won four of last five races. Flying Connection earned 50 qualifying points to the Kentucky Oaks.
Cityonethenile wins Harry Henson Handicap
Cityonethenile earned a win in the one mile, Harry Henson Handicap for trainer Andres Gonzalez and jockey Francisco Amparan.
Cityonethenile has won 13 of 36 career starts.
Dean's List wins Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes
In a thrilling race, Dean's List edged Truth Seeker and Bye Bye Bobby in the 6 1/1 furlong sprint. Dean's List has won five of eight races for trainer H. Ray Ashford, Jr. Leandro Goncalves won his second race of the day. Truth Seeker was second and Bye Bye Bobby was third. Bye Bye Bobby was second in last year's Sunland Derby.
Valentino Who wins at odds of 45-1
Valentino Who stunned the field at odds of 45-1 to win the New Mexico Breeders' Derby, which was contested at 1 and 1/16th miles. Jose A. Gonzalez is the winning trainer and Jose Miguel Vasquez is the winning jockey. Still In The Trap was second and Smartsrealgood was third.
I Think I'm Here wins stakes race
Jockey Alfredo Juarez, Jr. won his third race of the aboard I Think I'm Here in the mile and 70-yard New Mexico State University Stakes. I Think I"m Here has now won 4 of 13 starts. Jet N G was second and All Chrome is third.
Eda out of Harry Henson Handicap
The Bob Baffert trained Eda is a late scratch in the Harry Henson Handicap.
Crafty Money wins NM-bred stakes race
Crafty Money won the 1 1 16th miles New Mexico Breeders; Cup Oaks. The winning trainer is Nancy Summers and the winning jockey is Landro Goncalves. Judge Lanier Racing is the owner. Tiz a Journey was second and Doer Not a Faker was third.
Marked by a Storm impressive
The Dick Cappellucci trained Marked by a Storm won the 2nd race at Sunland a 6 1/2 furlong claiming race. The great Alfredo Juarez, Jr. was aboard. Cappellucci is winning at a better than 20 percent clip at the current Sunland meet.
Sunland Oaks, Derby fields
The Sunland Oaks, which is for 3-year-old fillies has a field of 7 horses and the Sunland Derby, which is for 3-year-old thoroughbreds will have field of six. Fort Bragg is skipping race and will run in Florida Derby. Had Fort Bragg run, it would have been field of seven.
Legendary trainer expected at races
Legendary horse trainer Bob Baffert is expected to be at races today. He has multiple horses in stakes races today.
El Paso jockey wins first race
El Paso jockey Luis Rodriguez wins first race of day aboard Restless Mover in 5 1/2 furlong, maiden claiming race.
Could be big day for Todd Fincher
Local trainer Todd Fincher could have big day today. Has several horses in the seven stakes races today and has horses in both the Sunland Oaks and Derby.
Scratches for today
Cheese Tray is scratched in the fifth race, which is the New Mexico State University Stakes. Horse is trained by Todd Fincher.
Fort Bragg is scratched from the Sunland Derby, which is the 10th race.
