Postgame review: Jacksonville Jaguars stun Buffalo Bills behind defensive effort

The Jacksonville Jaguars return to TIAA Bank Field on November 7 to take on the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills. The game is a battle of top players named Josh Allen — the Bills' quarterback against the Jaguars' pass rusher — and a rematch of the 2017 first-round playoff game, which Jacksonville won on its path to the AFC Championship game. Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars' No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, continues to pursue his first professional victory on American soil. A TIAA Bank Field victory would also be the first at home for Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer.

4:07 p.m. | Jaguars get ball back after Josh Allen fumble

The Bills took over at their own 20 after a punt with 3 minutes to work with. QB Josh Allen put a drive together with some crisp passes, but Dawuane Smoot sacked him on third down from the Jags' 39-yard line with 1:17 to go.

From the 48-yard line on fourth-and-15, Allen tried to buy time but couldn't find a receiver. He chucked it for Stefon Diggs, but the ball fell incomplete. Jags take over with 1:02 left.

3:50 p.m. | Jaguars get ball back after Josh Allen fumble

The Bills were putting a drive together when QB Josh Allen was stripped by Dawuane Smoot at the Jags' 37-yard line. The ball was scooped up by Josh Allen — the Jags' Josh Allen, who has had a monster day with a sack and interception against his doppelganger, as well.

The Jags take over with 5:41 to go in the game and a 9-6 lead.

3:30 p.m. | Field goal: Matthew Wright puts Jags in front

The Jaguars are leading Buffalo in the fourth quarter.

It started with that interception by Josh Allen. While the Jaguars couldn't push the football into the end zone, they still got close enough for a 22-yard chip shot field goal from Matthew Wright. No misses this time.

Jaguars 9, Bills 6.

3:17 p.m. | Josh Allen intercepts Josh Allen

Wow.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen has taken a beating on this drive, including the second sack of the game by Taven Bryan. Then, under pressure, he tried a risky pass - into the arms of Jaguars pass rusher Josh Allen. We've already seen a Josh Allen-on-Josh Allen sack today. Now, it's a Josh Allen on Josh Allen pick.

3:08 p.m. | Matthew Wright wide left again

Buffalo just keeps bailing out the Jaguars - but the Jags couldn't take advantage.

Matthew Wright missed a 42-yard field goal, which was negated anyway by a false start. Then, Wright missed a 47-yard field goal, only to get another chance once Buffalo was flagged for running into the kicker. On the third try, Wright missed wide left for the third consecutive kick.

Trevor Lawrence had this offense moving after the pick, advancing into Buffalo territory.

2:57 p.m. | That's a pick: Rudy Ford intercepts for Jaguars

That's the kind of sight that Jaguars fans haven't seen often.

It's an interception, and it comes from Rudy Ford. The safety was in the perfect position to grab an off-target Josh Allen pass in the red zone, squashing a Buffalo drive. A good time for his first NFL pick.

2:29 p.m. | Trevor Lawrence returns... and Carlos Hyde fumbles

Good news for Jaguars fans: Trevor Lawrence returned to the field, after C.J. Beathard led a drive up to the edge of the red zone, helped by a great Dan Arnold sideline catch and a Bills roughing-the-passer penalty.

Once Lawrence got back out there, though... an oops. Jerry Hughes stripped Carlos Hyde on a run up the middle, Levi Wallace recovered, and the Jaguars threw away their chance to take the lead before halftime.

The Jaguars and Bills are tied late in the first half, but that's not the big news of this quarter.

2:15 p.m. | Trevor Lawrence taken into locker room with injury

Trevor Lawrence had to be helped off the field and into the locker room after tackle Walker Little stepped on his ankle. C.J. Beathard is now at quarterback for the Jaguars.

Jacksonville 6, Buffalo 6, 3:20 2nd.

2:00 p.m. | Field goal: Matthew Wright nails career long for Jaguars

It was a chaotic and flag-filled drive, but it ends in points for the Jaguars. They might have gotten a helping hand from Bills coach Sean McDermott, too. Buffalo elected to decline a holding penalty on Jawaan Taylor on third down, but Matthew Wright made them pay with a career-high 55-yard field goal.

Jacksonville 6, Buffalo 6, 5:30 2nd.

1:50 p.m. | Tyler Bass scores field goal for Bills

That's the end of an eventful drive. Buffalo is back in front, with Josh Allen running wild again. The Bills quarterback got sacked by Taven Bryan with a one-handed sack near midfield, but he took off two plays later to scramble into field goal range. That set up a go-ahead boot from Tyler Bass.

Bills 6, Jaguars 3, 10:59 2nd.

1:26 p.m. | Field goal: Tyler Bass ties game for Buffalo

Josh Allen, the Buffalo version, is dangerous. The quarterback ran here, there and everywhere on a drive that advanced deep inside the Jaguars' red zone.

Once they got there, though, the Jacksonville defense stiffened, halting the march on a Myles Jack tackle that might have stopped a touchdown. Tyler Bass ended up tying the score with a field goal.

Bills 3, Jaguars 3, 3:54 1st.

1:14 p.m. | Field goal Jaguars: Matthew Wright converts from 39

That was weird - but it's worth points. The Jaguars thought their drive had been stopped in their own territory. But officials huddled and changed an unnecessary roughness call from Jaguars receiver Tavon Austin to Bills corner Tre'Davious White, and that meant an automatic first down.

Trevor Lawrence kept the drive moving, including a fourth-down conversion to Jamal Agnew, before the possession ran out of energy. In the end, Matthew Wright booted a 39-yard field goal for the lead.

Jaguars 3, Bills 0.

1:00 p.m. | It's kickoff time!

The Jaguars are ready to receive the opening kickoff against Buffalo at TIAA Bank Field.

Jaguars starting running back James Robinson battled a heel injury all week. Carlos Hyde will step in as the main back vs. Buffalo. Dare Ogunbowale and Devine Ozigbo, signed off waivers this week from the New Orleans Saints, fill out the Jaguars' RB depth chart.

The Bills will be without tight end Dawson Knox.
