After USC’s first turnover of the year, Furman’s Carson Jones hit Brock Chappell on a 16-yard TD with 4:41 left.

Sellers stayed in the game and led USC to another scoring drive after the defense forced a turnover. The freshman hit fellow freshman Nyck Harbor on a 7-yard touchdown with 10:40 left.

Freshman sensation LaNorris Sellers made his college debut and it resulted in a 50-yard touchdown pass to Tyshawn Russell.

Spencer Rattler picked up where he left off in second quarter by leading the Gamecocks on a four-play, scoring drive capped off with a 42-yard TD pass to Xavier Legette with 8:36 in the third.

Gamecocks lose Keenan Nelson

South Carolina is playing the second half without defensive back Keenan Nelson. It was announced during the SEC Network-plus broadcast. Nelson was seen on the sidelines without his shoulder pads watching as the Gamecocks began the second half. The TV broadcast didn’t say what the injury was but Nelson was hurt after colliding with teammate Debo Williams while making a tackle in the second quarter.

HALFTIME: South Carolina 27, Furman 14

The Gamecocks got a big boost before halftime as Spencer Rattler hit O’Mega Blake with three seconds left in the second quarter. USC went 75 yards in 25 seconds. Rattler hit Xavier Legette for 53-yard pass to set up the score.

Q2: South Carolina 20, Furman 14

Spencer Rattler throws his first TD of the game to backup QB Luke Doty, who has played some at receiver this year. Gamecocks go for two and are unsuccessful but they lead with 43 seconds left in the second quarter.

Q2: Furman 14, South Carolina 14

The Gamecocks got their second rushing touchdown of the game as Spencer Rattler scored on a 1-yard run. Rattler had a 16-yard completion on the drive and USC was helped by a 15-yard late hit.

Q2: Furman 14, South Carolina 7

The Paladins retook the lead as Tyler Huff hit backup receiver Luke Shiflett for a touchdowns with 11:57 left in second. Furman’s drive was 11 plays for 66 yards and took just over five minutes. South Carolina safety Jalon Kilgore left the game with an injury during the series but returned on the next drive.

The Gamecocks used a fast-paced drive capped off by Dakereon Joyner run for a 3-yard touchdown. Joyner had a big run on the drive and Spencer Rattler hit Ahmarean Brown for a big gain on the drive.

After South Carolina missed on a field goal on its opening drive, the Paladins responded with a 1-yard run by Dominic Roberto with 7:27 in the quarter. The big play in the drive was a half was a halfback pass from Joshua Harris to Kyndel Dean down to the Gamecocks’ 4.

Celebrity starter

Former Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw was the celebrity starter for the game and led the crowd in the Game-Cocks chant.

Change on offensive line

Shane Beamer said during his pre-game interview with Todd Ellis on 107.5 FM that Jakai Moore will move from guard to right tackle and Trai Jones will start at right guard. Vershon Lee starts at center with Nick Gargiulo at left guard and Sidney Fugar at right tackle. Jaxon Hughes also will be in early at right tackle. Beamer said freshmen Tree Babalade and Trovon Baugh expected to see time early in the game.

Uniform report

USC will be wearing white helmets with a black block C on the side and red facemasks for Saturday’s game. They will be wearing garnet jerseys and white pants. The last time they wore that combo was Sept. 24 vs. Charlotte.
