Replay: Wimberley falls to Carthage in showdown for Class 4A Division II title

A good season comes to an end for the Texans in the Class 4A DII state championship game.

For the record, Cade Stoever had 124 yards passing. Johnny Ball had 97 yards rushing.

This is the ninth state title for the Bulldogs.

Good crowd for Carthage-Wimberley

Both teams had to travel a good distance to get here but there are lots of fans wearing red (for Carthage) and blue (for Wimberley).

The official attendance: 15,039.

Wimberley has the ball, trailing 42-0, with less than 3 minutes to play.

A new record for Carthage receiver

Carthage receiver Noah Paddie has 192 yards receiving. That breaks a Class 4A state record set in 2017. Another Carthage player, Mekhi Colbert, had 191 yards that year in a game against Kennedale.

Carthage is living up to its lofty standards on both sides of the ball.

Wimberley is going to finish with a 15-1 record. Despite today, a great season, indeed.

The Bulldogs drive 80 yards to score. Running back Larandion Dowden on a short TD run. This Class 4A DII title game is a bit surprising to anyone who has seen Wimberley play this year.

Connor Cuff has 299 yards passing for Carthage.

The Bulldogs are going to earn their ninth state championship.

Wimberley drives from its own 10 to the Carthage 12. The 78-yard drive ends with a Cade Stoever interception in the end zone. Play is under review but it looks legit. Yes, and it goes to the 20 for the Bulldogs.

Wimberley had the ball for 7 minutes, 51 seconds and came up empty.

The second half has begun

Wimberley starts the second half at its own 10 after two penalties on the kickoff. It's time for the Texans to score a touchdown, right?

Carthage 35, Wimberley 0 (halftime)

Quarterback Connor Cuff finishes a brilliant first half for Carthage with his fourth touchdown pass, a 2-yard toss to Viencint Cabada. It was Cabada's first catch of the game. Cuff finishes the half with five total touchdowns, one on a short run.

Wimberley will get the ball to start the third quarter.

(5:25, second quarter) Carthage pours it on.

Connor Cuff throws his third touchdown pass to give Bulldogs 28-0 lead over Wimberley. This time it's Kydarious Matlock from 12 yards. Updated score: Carthage 28-0.

Wimberley has ball at its own 20. Time for Texans to get going.

Carthage a tough opponent

Did you know that the Bulldogs have trailed only once this year and that was last week. No wonder they are ranked No. 1 in Class 4A DII. Their mission is to contain Wimberley's Johnny Ball, who has rushed for 722 yards and 10 touchdowns in the playoffs.
