Soccer is coming to Notre Dame Stadium.

The iconic college football stadium will host a game between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund on July 19. The game between the English Premier League giant and German Bundesliga team will be the first time a competitive soccer game has been played there.

"We are honored to partner with Fenway Sports Group and Fenway Sports Management in hosting Liverpool F.C. at historic Notre Dame Stadium," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. "This is a perfect event for Notre Dame in that it combines iconic sport brands, celebrates a sport that is of great importance to us as evidenced by our four NCAA soccer titles and addresses the growing international reach of our University. We look forward to hosting Liverpool F.C. and invite its fans from throughout North America and the world to visit us for the match against Dortmund."

The game at Notre Dame Stadium will be the first of three preseason friendlies that Liverpool is playing in the United States. The team will, naturally, play at Fenway Park on July 21 against Spanish La Liga team Sevilla and at Yankee Stadium against Portuguese side Sporting CP on July 24.

Liverpool’s game also continues a trend of Notre Dame utilizing its football stadium for big non-football events. Do you blame them for wanting the extra revenue? Garth Brooks played a concert (that later turned into a CBS television special) at the stadium in October and the NHL’s Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins was played on Jan. 1.
