Livestrong at YMCA free for cancer survivors

MONROE — A new session of a program for cancer survivors has just begun at the Monroe Family YMCA.

The 12-week Livestrong program is free for adults with cancer. Six people can attend each session.

The program was started by the YMCA of the USA and the Livestrong Foundation. It came to Monroe in 2016.

“The goal is for cancer survivors (anyone after a diagnosis) to reclaim their wellness in spirit, mind and body,” Amanda Schmitz, marketing director for the Y, said.

Participants use cardio and strength equipment and the pool and also take part in fitness classes.

"There is also time slated for participants to connect and support one another in a private space," Schmitz said.

Livestrong is for adults before, during and after cancer treatment.

“It is a proven, evidence- and research-based program that empowers cancer survivors to take an active role in their own health by engaging in a strength and conditioning program. Focusing on health, rather than the disease, Livestrong at the Y helps cancer survivors move beyond illness to reclaim wellness in spirit, mind and body," Schmitz said. "(Attendees say) they appreciate the program, to reclaim their wellness alongside others who have experienced similar challenges."

Admission is free.

"Because we appreciate the significant financial burden that may accommodate a cancer diagnosis, the program is available to Monroe County residents at no cost," Schmitz said. "Funding support from Monroe County Commission on Aging’s Senior Millage Funding supports the program, providing support for Monroe County residents ages 60 and older. We appreciate our partnership with Monroe Cancer Center, who makes many referrals to the program. Because we offer this program at no-cost to all, sponsorships and donations are welcome and appreciated."

To get started, attendees have an intake interview.

"It is required to ensure the upcoming session is ideal for the survivor to participate," Schmitz said.
