Livingston Parish Schools benefit from mental health program for high school students

DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (BRPROUD) — Livingston Parish Public Schools is now offering a mental health initiative for high school students.

The initiative is a teletherapy program called Daybreak Health. Tristian Owens is a Denham Springs High School counselor and said she can help.

“Every year the students with mental health issues is increasing,” said Owens. “Part of that is from COVID. Also, our parish suffered from the flood and these students were at a young impressible age.”

“This new teletherapy program is where our students can sign up for up to 12 sessions of teletherapy with licensed clinical providers,” said Superintendent Joe Murphy, of Livingston Parish Public Schools.

Owens said telehealth services require parental consent. Daybreak Health shows that 90% of teens said they were matched to the right therapist according to their needs and preferences at no cost.

“Daybreak is going to be an excellent asset for our students because it gives them that need right then and there,” Owens said.

According to Murphy, Daybreak Health can help by providing weekly one-on-one teletherapy sessions.

“Not only does it address those needs with the students, but there’s also a family plan in this Daybreak Health, where we can engage with families who may need some services,” Murphy said.

Owens said students can reach out to their school counselor or scan a QR code to complete an interest form.

“I can’t wait to see what happens once we get these students through a full 12 weeks and what they have to say about it because I feel like it’s going to be positive no matter what,” Owens said.

From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 25, there will be one-on-one sessions for parents and students to learn more about Daybreak Health. It will be held at the LP Literacy & Technology Center, 9261 Florida Boulevard in Walker.
