‘He’ll be missed and remembered’: Avalon Borough mourns death of Mayor Tom Lloyd, Jr.

A black wreath on the Avalon Borough building marks the passing of Mayor Tom Lloyd Jr.

He died over the weekend at the age of 64.

“I feel kind of bad about it,” said life-long Borough resident Paul Myers. “It’s just, what can I say?”

Lloyd spent eight years representing Avalon on the Borough Council.

He had been mayor since 2017.

“Everybody knows him. Everybody knows the legacy. The name carries the weight,” said Dormont Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Stakich.

Lloyd’s death is equally as impactful in Dormont, where he served more than 25 years as a volunteer firefighter.

“Tom’s family is well entrenched in the Dormont community,” said Stakich.

Lloyd followed in the footsteps of his father as a public servant.

The elder Lloyd was a firefighter as well, and a long-time mayor of Dormont.

“Community service definitely runs in their veins,” said Stakich.

Lloyd leaves behind a wife, three children, six stepchildren, and many grandchildren.

“It would be sad,” said Myers. “It would be something that I wouldn’t want, if I was them.”

“We’ll miss him,” added Stakich. “It’s definitely a loss for the community, both Avalon and Dormont. He’ll be missed and remembered.”

Lloyd’s funeral service is set for Thursday afternoon in Avalon.
