Lloyd, Bobby V., Pleasure P headline drive-in concert festival coming in August to Soldier Field

Several drive-in concerts have popped up around Chicago in recent weeks as the live entertainment industry continues to remodel its business in the face of COVID-19 guidelines.

Last weekend, the Highlights Festival welcomed rapper DaBaby to Hazel Crest, and this week, the Lakeshore Drive-In concert featured Chicago musicians Mick Jenkins and Ric Wilson at the Adler Planetarium parking lot.

Next month, a strong bill of artists including singers Lloyd, Bobby V. and Pleasure P of Pretty Ricky, as well as Chicago hip-hop trio Do or Die, will headline the Drive-In Festival on August 22 at another Chicago mainstay, Soldier Field.

The show will be a socially distanced affair, with cars parked six feet apart and masks required. However, guests will be allowed to place two lawn chairs in front of their cars, sit atop their cars or back into a spot in order to sit in a trunk area.

For ticketing, a car pass ($210) admits up to four guests in a single car. Single guest passes ($55) can be added on for cars with more than four guests or for smaller parties. The VIP Pass ($500) grants up to six people access to a seated VIP area.

Food, alcohol and other beverages will be available for purchase on-site via local food trucks. Co-organizer Mike Mosley wrote in an email that the producers are finalizing details to bring two or three Black- or minority-owned food trucks for the festival.

All cars will be required to have a designated driver.

Five Black event curators organized the event, a group that includes Bobby Burke, Charles Martin and Ronald Platt of Civilized Lifestyle; Mike “Orie” Mosley of AFROTRAK; and Sigma Chris. The festival’s local genesis and production is in the same vein as other recent drive-in events in the area.

Doors for the event will open at 6 p.m., and there’s a 21-and-over age requirement. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster.
