Loaded gun found inside box of school supplies donated to Gwinnett elementary school

A Gwinnett elementary school staff member found a loaded firearm in a box of school donation supplies.

Britt Elementary School sent a letter to families about the discovery that happened on the first day of school.

According to the letter, a staff member was unpacking a box of donated classroom supplies when they found a loaded gun underneath the supplies.

The school immediately notified school resource officers. Principal Melissa Madsen said there were no students on campus and no one was injured.

“Britt Elementary School and Gwinnett County Public Schools take this situation seriously. I am grateful for our team’s professional and quick response to this incident,” Madsen wrote.

The school says it reviewed safety protocols Thursday morning.

“I want to assure you that Britt Elementary is a safe place for students to learn. Safety is a focus on our campus for administrators, staff, and students. We will continue working with students, staff, and our community to ensure that our school is a safe and secure place for learning each day,” Madsen wrote.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to the school district Monday morning about any new updates in the investigation.
