Loaded gun found in local high schooler’s backpack

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — An Akron Public Schools high school principal found a loaded firearm in a student’s book bag on Monday morning.

It was discovered at Garfield Community Learning Center along Brown Street, during “routine checks,” of the school’s scanning equipment, according to a statement from a district spokesperson.

The firearm was confiscated and police were notified.

“The safety and well-being of our scholars and staff are our top priorities. We take incidents such as this seriously and are grateful for the swift action by our staff and law enforcement,” reads the statement. “Our school security protocols were followed precisely, and we will continue to review and enhance our safety measures to ensure a secure learning environment for everyone.”
