Lobster for Lent: Pop-up spot ‘The Nell Shell’ is serving up lobster rolls

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — If you’re not eating meat during Lent, but you’re getting tired of fried fish, there’s another less local option.

WGNO’s Kenny Lopez found a new pop-up spot that’s serving New England-style lobster rolls.

In Louisiana, we love our shrimp, we love our crawfish, but where’s the lobster love?

Lobster rolls are on the menu this Lent at “The Nell Shell,” which is a pop-up seafood shack at a snoball stand on Magazine Street.

“We’re famous for lobster rolls, hot is Connecticut style, and cold is Maine style,” Co-owner of “The Nell Shell” Chris Otten said.

Otten went on to say, “You can taste how fresh the lobster meat is.”

The Anatomy of a Crawfish

Two friends, Chris Otten and Mary Nell Bennett, opened this seafood shack in December and since have sold around 2,000 lobster rolls.

“Obviously, people are focused on seafood during Lent. We’re offering a product that most place in the city is not,” Otten said.

“Obviously, crawfish is competing with lobster in price right now, so you might as well go for the lobster,” Bennett said.

Or you can go for their seacuterie board, which you can add caviar to.

“It is carry out, but we feel carry out can be nice,” she said.

This seafood is sure making no meat Fridays easier.

“Everything on the menu is Lent-friendly,” Bennett said.

Owners say they are currently finishing up their plans for a food truck, and they are looking for a permanent spot. They will be at the snoball stand until the end of February.
