Lobsterman catches military rocket miles off Maine shoreline

A Cushing lobsterman caught quite the surprise Tuesday morning after noticing an interesting metal object in his lobster pot.

Maine State Police say that around 9 a.m., the man was fishing about 20 miles offshore when he pulled a 5 ft. long military rocket out of the water.

The lobsterman brought the rocket to shore and contact authorities on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Commander Pescitelli and Bomb Technician Keith Barton were called in to analyze the rocket, which they identified as a MK29 Mod-0. Despite x-ray imaging, the technicians could not confirm whether or not the rocket still had explosive material inside of it.

Because of that, the decision was made to countercharge the rocket.

State Police say the weapon has been rendered safe and properly disposed of.
