Local barbecue restaurant switching from one Wichita suburb to another, seeks donations

Nancy Parish closed her Nancy’s A-Maize-N Sandwiches restaurant at 5125 N. Maize Road more than two years ago.

Now, that restaurant space is about to get a new tenant specializing in barbecue.

For weeks now, the owners of Masters of Barbecue — who last year closed their restaurant at 1710 E. 61st St. North in Park City — have been sharing on social media their plans to open a restaurant in the former Nancy’s space and call it Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ & Grill.

Owner Eric King has not returned multiple calls and messages about the new restaurant, but a message the restaurant recently sent out to its customers said that the Park City location, which opened in late 2021, had closed because of “unforeseen circumstances.” Though it doesn’t give a timeline for the Maize opening, the message said that the new restaurant will serve the same barbecue classics plus “some exciting new additions.”

The message also said that the Masters of Barbecue owners are working on a second location in south Wichita and have plans for a third on the east side. It directed customers to a Kickstarter campaign, where the owners are asking people to donate money toward new equipment and seed capital for the south-side location. The campaign expires on Feb. 15 and so far has raised $251 of its $8,500. (An architectural drawing on the Kickstarter page shows a new restaurant with a big outdoor green space, but it’s unclear where it might be going.)

The owners recently set up a new Facebook page for the Maize business and are directing people to it from the old Masters of Barbecue page, which a post says will disappear on Feb. 29.

I’ll let you know if I hear back from the owners.
