Local Brewer Crafts Beer To Support Health Care Workers

SANTA MONICA, CA — A local brewery is putting their skills to work to help healthcare workers struggling to contain the coronavirus outbreak: by brewing a beer for charity.

Santa Monica Brew Works has announced they'll start selling their new Unsung Heroes Juicy IPA on Saturday. The brewer says for each 32 oz crowler of the beer they sell, $5 will be donated to UCLA Health’s COVID-19 Coronavirus Greatest Needs In Patient Care And Healthcare Provider Protection Fund.

In a statement announcing the new brew, brewery CEO Scott Francis says the company felt deeply motivated to help out during the pandemic:

The Patient Care and Healthcare Provider Protection Fund raises money to fight the coronavirus through a variety of ways: paying for patient and family care, providing social services, buying personal protective equipment like masks for health care workers and more. Santa Monica Brew Works says they chose to support UCLA Health because the women at the brewery had worked with them in the past, for Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day, an International Women's Day brewing event.

The brewery describes the new beer as a blend of tropical, citrus and pine tree flavors made from the Pink Boots Hop Blend from Yakima Chief Hops. The hops are also part of a charity effort, a portion of their proceeds go to benefit women entering the brewing industry.

Santa Monica Brew Works will sell the charity IPAs through the end of May, or until their 10-barrel batch runs out. The crowlers will be sold through their tasting room, which remains open Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
