LOCAL BRIEFS: Marian hires Kurzinsky as golf coach

HOMETOWN — Marian High School announced through social media Thursday that Randy Kurzinsky has been hired as the school's new head golf coach.

Kurzinsky is a 2008 graduate of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, after playing several seasons at Mahanoy Area. He played for three seasons on the golf team at LaSalle University, serving as team captain his senior year. He graduated from LaSalle with a degree in Accounting.

The owner of White Birch Golf Course, Kurzinsky is a three-time Schuylkill County Amateur Golf Medal-Play champion and Match-Play champion. He has competed in the Florida Open, Florida Amateur, Pennsylvania Open, Pennsylvania Amateur and Pennsylvania Mid Am.

Maroons polo team ties opening match

ERWINNA — The Schuylkill County-based Maroons 1925 polo team tied in its first match of the 2022 season Saturday, battling the Bucks County-based team of Arby Dobb Farm to a 6-6 deadlock at Tinicum Park Polo in Upper Bucks County in front of an estimated crowd of more than 1,000 spectators.

The team is captained by Middleport native David Russek and features many international players. The starters were Russek, Affan Iftikhar from Allentown, New Jersey; and Abdullah Chaudhry and Daniel Arnold, both from New Jersey. Substitutes included Talha Chaudry, who was born in Pakistan, Reah Lowenthal from Doylestown, and Nadina Thomas from Doylestown. The team's composition featured both men and women competing equally.

Arnold, a high school sophomore and a member of the National Youth Team, opened up the scoring for Maroons 1925 with a 50-yard lofting shot in the first Chukker. After the 3rd Chukker and into halftime the teams were tied 5-5. In the second half a tight defensive game was played out with another high school student, Chaudhry, scoring a goal to put Maroons 1925 up front with 3 minutes to go in the game. A final goal in the last minute by Arby Dobb tied it back up and when time expired in the final 7 minute and 30 second Chukker, the game ended tied.

More than 30 Maroons 1925 fans traveled and participated in a full-game tailgate, many at the Maroons 1925 sideline tent area. Maroons 1925 has partnered with the Schuylkill County Historical Society to enable any current or future member of the society to sign up for a free tailgate field side during a future polo match. Free passes are handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.
