LOCAL BRIEFS: North's Newmann to compete in showcase
Aug. 5—North Medford High senior-to-be Trey Newmann has been selected to compete at this weekend's Area Code Games in San Diego, an elite showcase for baseball players in the Class of 2023 and 2024.
Newmann has spent the summer playing travel ball with the Mercedes-Benz Baseball Club out of Washington, playing throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as in Florida.
This past spring, Newmann earned second-team all-Southwest Conference honors as a pitcher for the Black Tornado.
Newmann will be competing for the Kansas City Royals, one of eight regional teams that will play in the five-day showcase in California. The Royals represent the Pacific Northwest and include players from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Kansas and Missouri.
Each regional team is set to begin with practices on Saturday, and games will be played Sunday-Thursday at the University of San Diego.
Officials needed for coming sports seasons
The Oregon Athletic Officials Association and the Oregon School Activities Association are recruiting officials for the high school fall sports seasons. There is an immediate need for officials in football, volleyball and soccer.
