LOCAL BRIEFS: Southern Area to restart Legion program
Oct. 7—Southern Area to rejoin Legion league in 2023
The Schuylkill-Berks American Legion Baseball League unanimously approved readmitting Southern Area to the league for the 2023 season at its meeting Sept. 29.
Southern Area's franchise was frozen for the 2022 season when the A's couldn't find coaches to run the team. Former Southern Area manager and Legion Baseball Hall of Famer Jake Whetstone will serve as Southern Area's general manager, with Clay Leibold and Jeremy Gustitus directing the A's on the field. Former assistant coach Jerry Freiwald will be assisting Whetstone.
Players ages 16-19 living in the Blue Mountain or Schuylkill Haven school districts are eligible to play for Southern Area. Any players living in the team's area who played with another Legion team in 2022 can return to the A's if they wish, or remain with their adopted team.
Pottsville Area LL to hold meeting
The Pottsville Area Little League will conduct a general meeting Sunday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Hope Amvets, 1300 Seneca St., Pottsville. All members are welcome to attend.
