The race for representation in New Bern's second ward has its first official candidate.

On Monday, New Bern resident Jennell Reddick announced she'll be running for the Ward 2 seat on the board of aldermen. Alderwoman Jameesha Harris currently represents Ward 2.

"I've never had political aspirations at all," said Reddick. "The past couple of years, I have been involved in some areas that I never thought I would be involved in. The bottom line is supplying the need to the community and there is so much out there to do. I just want to serve."

Her campaign is focused on "economic development, education and bridging the gap," according to an email from Reddick.

Speaking in terms of Ward 2's needs, Reddick said the area of Duffyfield is considered a dry area with a lack of businesses. Resources like a small chain grocery store is something she would like to see, but her main objective is to reunite the people.

Over the past couple of years, the rebuilding of the Stanley White Recreation Center has been a talking point for the community. The process between FEMA, the city, and those directly impacted by the loss of Stanley White was something Reddick said divided the community.

"I feel like we are a little scattered, we are angry, we have a lot to say, but nothing is getting done," added Reddick. "There is a disconnect, unfortunately, but I just want us to come together, and say here are our priorities, we are going to start here instead of just talking about it."

Reddick went on to say the division between the community and local elected officials was already there. That division did not help the overall outcome when the city decided to rebuild the center located between Gaston Boulevard and Third Avenue.

In order to reunite those who live in Ward 2, Reddick says her ward needs new leaders. Understanding she won't be able to listen to everyone's voice, being able to lean on local leaders will allow her to bring the communities voice to the table

Growth with the workforce and economic development are two examples said to be vital to the sustainability of the city for Reddick. She also vows to help connect citizens to many educational resources and programs in order to bridge the learning gaps brought on by Hurricane Florence and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reddick is the president of R.L. Thompson Company in New Bern.
