Local college roundup: CGA men advance to NEWMAC tennis title match

May 1—NEW LONDON — Myles Decoste beat Ian Tracy 6-0, 6-4 in No. 1 singles and teamed with Sean Dreher to win at No. 1 doubles as the top-seeded Coast Guard men's tennis team swept fourth-seeded Wheaton 5-0 on Saturday in the semifinals of the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference tournament.

The Bears will host No. 2 MIT, a 5-2 winner over No. 3 Babson in Sunday's noon final. CGA beat MIT 5-4 during the regular season.

Charles Norman added a singles win and the doubles teams of Lucas Arora-Norman and Paul Choi-Banks Evans were also victorious for the Bears (13-2).

Baseball

— Juan Abreau's RBI single scored New London's Lelo Martinez for the go-ahead run in Mitchell College's 4-2 win over Eastern Nazarene in the New England Collegiate Conference. Montville's Kenny Heon allowed just one hit over 4.1 innings of relief with eight strikeouts to earn the win, Bo Yaworski had two hits and two RBI and Abreau had two hits and scored for the Mariners (24-10, 7-4).

— John Thigpen allowed just three hits over seven innings and struck out 12 as Coast Guard beat Springfield 7-1 to earn a NEWMAC doubleheader split. John Carroll had three hits, two RBI and two runs, Justin Stasiak went 2-for-2, including a double, with two runs and an RBI and Cody Fidler had three hits and an RBI in the second game for the Bears (17-15, 9-8). Wyatt Duthu went 3-for-4, including double, with two RBI and a run in a 13-3, seven-inning loss in the opener.

— Ben Huber had two hits, including a two-run home run, with three runs and three RBI as No. 15 UConn beat Butler 14-7 in the Big East. Casey Dana went 4-for-5, including a solo home run, with three runs and two RBI, Zach Bushling went 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI and Erick Stock had three hits, two runs and an RBI for UConn (36-8, 10-1).

Softball

— Anya Chase pitched a two-hitter in the first game and Becca O'Connor pitched a one-hitter in the second as MIT swept Coast Guard, 8-0 in six innings and 8-0 in five innings, in a NEWMAC doubleheader. Natalie Beck, Christine Carey and Isabelle Shroyer all singled for Coast Guard (18-14, 11-7).

— Reese Guevarra hit a walk-off RBI single, scoring Sami Barnett, as UConn edged St. Joseph 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. Meghan O'Neil scattered seven hits over 6.2 innings with 15 strikeouts for UConn (34-15). Erika Coreth and Lexi Hastings both doubled and scored for the Huskies, who lost the opener, 5-2. Guevarra added two hits and an RBI.

— Darcy Castro had three hits, including an RBI double, as Eastern Nazarene swept Mitchell, 1-0 and 3-0, in a NECC doubleheader. Gemma Landry and Alex Lopez each had two hits for the Mariners (17-19, 4-6).

Men's lacrosse

— Nicholas Fulgione had two goals and five assists as Emerson edged Coast Guard 14-13 in the NEWMAC. Waterford's Caleb Holdridge had three goals and four assists, Taylor Gustafson had three goals and two assists and Nate Gee had two goals and an assist for CGA (9-7, 4-2).

Women's track and field

— Michelle Kwafo set two school records, including winning the 100-meter dash (11.91 seconds), as Coast Guard finished fourth at the NEWMAC Championships. MIT won the team title (246.5) and Coast Guard scored 50. Kwafo placed second in the 100 hurdles and set the school record during the preliminaries (14.67). The Bears also received wins from Madison Garrigus in the pole vault (11 feet, 1.75 inches) and Madelynn Greene in the triple jump (35-6.75) while Meghan Churm set a school-record in the 10,000 (third place, 38.08.98) and Kelly Wade, Heather Huang, Hannah Jamison and Kwafo set a school-record in the 4x100 relay (fourth, 49.50).

Men's track and field

— John Buchert was second in the hammer (173-6), sixth in the discus (121-7) and eighth in the shot put (42-3.25) as Coast Guard finished fifth at the NEWMAC Championships. The Bears' other place-winners were Jonathan Barrett in the discus (fourth, 124-6), Jake Thoenen in the 3,000 steeplechase (fourth, 9:58.24), Philip Renaud in the javelin (fourth, 161-2), Antonio Rivera in the discus (fifth, 122-3), Ensen Sgaglio in the steeplechase (fifth, 10:11.40), Greg Costello in the 10,000 (sixth, 33:21.22), Kyle Boe in the 5,000 (seventh, 15:27.49), John Hanson in the steeplechase (seventh, 10:14.86), Andrew Harris in the 400 hurdles (eighth, 1:00.96) and the 4x400 relay team of Jeffrey Meyer, Ryan Weston, Brian Green and David Loomis (fifth, 3:28.90).
