Local college roundup: Mitchell baseball advances in NECC tourney

May 7—HENNIKER, N.H. — Mitchell College opened play in the New England Collegiate Conference baseball tournament with a 6-3 win over No. 3 Eastern Nazarene on Friday.

No. 2 Mitchell plays top seed and host New England College on Friday at 11 a.m. The Mariners rallied from a two-run deficit, scoring five unanswered runs for the win.

Bo Yaworski hit a two-run homer and doubled, former Montville standout Dougie DelaCruz had an RBI double and Owen Robbins of Salem had a sacficie fly for Mitchell. Montville's Kenny Heon (2-1) got the win in relief, allowing two hits and no runs over 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

In other games:

— Matt Donlan hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift UConn past Creighton, 3-1, in the Big East. Bryan Padilla had two hits and scored for UConn (38-8) and winning pitcher Austin Peterson allowed just three hits over eight innings with nine strikeouts an no earned runs.

Softball

— Coast Guard was eliminated from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tournament, losing to No. 6 Wheaton 3-2 in nine innings. No. 5 Coast Guard ends the season at 19-16. Tristan Keller of Wheaton homered in the seventh to tie the game and hit an RBI double in the ninth. Coast Guard got an RBI double from Christine Carey in the sixth inning and Isabelle Shroyer singled home Carey for a 2-0 lead.

— Mitchell College lost twice and was ousted from the NECC tournament. The No. 2 Mariners lost to No. 3 Lesley 5-4 and were eliminated by No. 4 New England College 9-0 in five innings. Alex Lopez had an RBI double and Sydney Oatway, Nene Capeles and Hannah Lemke drove in runs in a three-run third in the opener for Mitchell (19-21).

— Jana Sanden hit a walk-off two-run single to give UConn a 4-3 win over Villanova in the Big East. Lexi Hastings hit an RBI single and scored for UConn (35-15) and Briana Marcelino, Reese Guevarra and Aziah James all singled and scored.
